The extension for 3DS Max / Design 2014 has been released and is now available on Autodesk’s subscription center, in the Downloads->Product Enhancements section. The extension requires the recently released Service Pack 3, which is included. New features include Point Cloud support, Python scripting, and Stereo Camera. You can read more details on the release on Autodesk.
The python support is something I’ve been waiting for!
I’m glad they listened to the customers and came to their senses and implemented it, makes it much easier to make code that works between many packages.
Am I correct in thinking that the Stereo camera only works with ATI video cards?
I like that when python code is executed, you get #success. It reminds me of how my social networking addicted teenage son speaks.
Did somebody made some benchmarks of python and maxscript?
The new stereo camera system also works on Nvidia cards if anaglyph (red-green) stereo is enough for you. It is only the advanced stereo modes that require an AMD card.
Forgive me for being thrown for a loop, but I seem to recall when buying my last system, there were a ton of factors that basically amounted to “Okay, Autodesk wants me to use an nVidia card”…Now I have my nice nVidia-based system, and now there features that basically don’t work unless I have an ATI card?
This next bit is certain to make me look hypocritical, since I’m moving off Max as my main software because of stagnation in terms of new features, but I’d rather that they NOT release new features that are hardware dependent in this way. I get releasing something that’s so slick that an old, sad card can’t handle it, but this is ludicrous.
It’s possible that it’s a problem with my new software as well, but I haven’t seen it yet.
Does this mean that people have to choose? Stereo? You have to buy ATI, but you won’t be able to use certain display features well. Nvidia – you can have those features but for stereo whip out the glasses you bought in 1958. Cutting edge!
It seems that Autodesk likes to follow Adobe on everything.
