Autodesk has made available a video showing some of 3DS Max 2015’s new features. Watch it on YouTube.
Source: Kristoffer Helander
It seems they finally updated the Scene Explorer…
Not bad, apparently not a lot of folks noticed, but that was also ShaderFX you saw a glimpse of in the beginning, finally, and FINALLY, a new scene explorer(with drag & drop!), and the way the parts are placed on the armor, almost felt like live surface? could it be? there’s a toggle next to the Scale gizmo icon in the toolbar…
Scene Explorer? Is that the equivalent to Outliner script?! I couldn’t tell the video was very sped up…
nevermind…actually its something from max already…
i really couldnt tell whats new from that sneak.
N
every new version of 3ds max become more featureless….
uninspiring at all 🙁
I don’t get it. Why can they release something like this but not actually say whats in the next version?
@vance Because they want us speculating about it on web forums for days on end to generate some PR buzz.
I get that part but like in the latest happy hour event they kept going on about how they legally can’t talk about whats in upcoming releases. So is this some dumb legal thing where they can show you but not speak actual words about it?
@vance At this point I’m pretty sure they’re allowed to divulge information, it’s a month or so away from release. I’m not sure what the exact time frame for it is.
I can’t believe we are talking about the idea behind the concept of ‘Sneak Peeks’, and not about it’s contents, oh wait, I almost did it again, I almost became a pun in their elaborate play of PR’ing again, that was close, I almost felt happy and exited again, should snap out of it… slap… slap… there.
Max 2014 was announced on the 26th March I think. So possibly expect something in a couple of weeks.
They have to ship within a certain period of an announcement.
I hope one day I can create water,fire and smoke in 3ds max without plugin and problem . but Autodesk don’t want it.
Shaderfx, nested layers, an updated scene explorer and some kind of new placement tool. Cool excited to see more.
that’s not bad but not enough maya now have naiad and max need equal tool
I’m just assuming this is a taste and the great, exciting features are yet to be revealed. Until the official release I’ll wait to see if there’s actually more to come, I’ll hold my judgement til then.
Weak Sauce….yet again. They require you to buy a new license now, if you didn’t see a reason to stay on subscription the last year or two. And what in the past 2-3yrs would be worth $3700 + plus subs? Autodesk, you guys are clueless.
Thank you Nickolay, I’ve always respected you and now I see why, you are one of the few in many different forums that are actually appreciating this instead of even now complaining about things that could have been and may be in the future, I may be wrong and they may or may not deliver in the end, one~two years from now, who know, but Eddie Perlberg promised change and put priority as his criteria, that day I told myself if a new scene explorer/layer manager wasn’t among the first things that he would ever deliver I won’t trust in anything he says because that has the highest priority for the everyday use of almost anybody using Max, and guess what, he delivered, the first show case, and that’s what makes me happy and puts my mind at rest a bit, so thanks Max’s team, for now at least you have my trust.
@Maziar : completely agree with you. Complaining all the time will only discourage max team. When they do good stuff, we must also encourage them. these are essential changes i’m witnessing in this short sneak peak. In a very short time new max team have showed us there is still hope left.
Thanks for the shout-out Maziar!
Agreed Pflow is very flexible with Box 2 and 3.And Oleg’s cooking up new things… Everyone is screaming for ICE, that makes no sense to me because most are too scared to even touch Genome/Lab. Let alone know what to do with them…And your right ICE and pflow and really any other particle system is way different. Maybe that’s because ICE isn’t a particle system. People keep confusing that… development , seems to be all about bridges now. So Bifrost is definitely welcome in Max. And I would be surprised if we didn’t get that within the next two years. Keep your heads up! Cheers, N
If users don’t sound off clearly, then Autodesk…driven by stockholders and executives that know little to nothing about the product, making the choices about direction and content (ie. giving Naiad to Maya and not 3ds Max)…will view the silence as complacency.
Their pricing and upgrade changes the past 2yrs are enough to get outraged about. Their financial shortfalls this past year ARE NOT reflective of a “Transition.” It’s because they are simply being way too damn coercive, while charging more for less and less.
They need to hear it…loud and clear.
I am 100% behind praising the team when they do something right.
Right now it’s just words, and for me AD hasn’t DONE much right for a while.
While I am all for praising when due, please forgive me if I am unwilling to praise the team for SAYING what they would LIKE to get done.
If you’ll recall, Frank came along with a VERY similar backstory and all the same lofty words…POOF! Gone.
I’m using 3dsmax very long time, then intrigued to know modo, if I compare the video above and this modo video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQWD7M_2cEY, 3dsmax feel like joke and old.
3dsmax design software is very old, from slow entering into 3dsmax software, slow modifier , scanline rendering the old and slow to raytacing, mentalray delayed due to a send process and etc.
3dsmax has become more and more retarded, even began to lose by BLENDER, too much politics in AD, too many reasons.
its very sad, MAX<MAYA
Autodesk’s shift from Max to Maya is really strange to me. It’s like if Microsoft had purchased Bungie, but instead of turning them into a Halo factory, MS had instead begun focusing on making Mac-only games, to the eventual exclusion of Windows gaming and console development.
I appreciate the fact that Maya wasn’t dismembered and all its ideas shoved into Max the moment Autodesk had the code and copyrights in hand, but I’d like some reassurance that Max won’t be likewise dismembered to feed the Maya beast. And in my opinion, the best way to do that is for Autodesk to start throwing their weight behind both Max and Maya.
see 3ds max facebook page it seems new tool for geppetto (populate) :
https://www.facebook.com/Autodesk3dsMax
so far…free scripts intergrated into 3dsmax 2015 and a object placement tool pinched from modo401…yeh 401…like 5 years ago!
Booom!…what was that?…that’s modo 801 landing ontop of 3dsmmax 2015 release video….
come on Autodesk get off your fat lazy asses and do something other than kill softimage.
It doesn’t matter if modo or anyother software had it before, what matters is now we have it. so lets just try to see the brighter side for a little time, and see if things will change.
every year we hear the ‘we have exciting things to show you soon”..this year they actually have to be true, it’s been a VERY long time since ‘exciting new stuff arrived for 3dsmax..they’ve simply milked the users for the last 5 or so releases…getting rather tired of this…i love 3dsmax been a user since 1999 but £500+ a year on subs needs to be well spent now more than ever.
…just to add, of course i’d like to believe that 3dsmax 2015 is going to be stellar with lots of new innovative tools, a general speed up…the ability to load older u.i./icons without having to delete the current ones, a boot up time that doesn’t allow me to bake a cake whilst waiting:)…here’s hoping !…..come on Autodesk..pull one out of the bag!
So.. What would be the “innovative tool” you want to see?
It can not be fluid. There are already enough fuild app/plugins.
Procedural node base workflow? Houdini have had that for years.
Super charged mentalray? Nah… I use VRay.
Let’s hear what would be “THE-INNOVATIVE-NEVER-EXIST” feature that you would not whine!
let’s see…
1.real time preview renderer ( not iray..but mental ray)
2.lip sync tools something like voice o matic
3.face tracking tools…either with kinect or other markerless tools with video
4.full sculpting tools would be nice
5.phantom points
@Well..
The term ‘innovation’ indicates that it’s a feature/tool which can not be predicted, thus it’s not easy to give you a “list of wanted (non-existent) innovations”.
I’m a bit with steve here, ADSK has a strong tendency to buy-in innovations and new tech instead developing “creative tools” in-house.
A good good example for an innovation is the particle-painter from allegorithmic. It hadn’t existed before and is a new (and quite creative workflow).
Let’s swap the word “innovative” for “missing.” If we accept that we should just leave things like fluids, smoke, fire and more extensive Character Animation tools, all the 3rd party plugins, then Max would be nothing more than just a $4500 hub for those.
Mental Ray is a 3rd party plugin.Character Studio, CAT, ProBooleans, Hair N Fur, Cloth, Graphite Modeling tools, etc…are all former 3rd party.
Maya, Houdini and even Blender have had VFX tools built-in for years now. What’s even more insulting is Maya is now slated to get a 2nd helping of that…while Max users have to shell out another $850 just for fire/smoke (no fluids).
Guys you should post those info on 3dsmaxfeedback.autodesk.com,we need let AD leader to see that!
well 3ds max 2015 is due out in less than 2 weeks so little point listing what we want for 2015…i’ll wait yntiilit’s revealed then if needs be make a poll for 2016…hope it’s a shortlist…ie autodesk deliver a stunning release with 2015.
It’s not even fluids, it’s that Max’s atmospheric effects haven’t advanced at all (unless you count changing the name from combustion to fire). I totally get the argument of leaving some stuff to the specialists, but for a freelancer it’s hard to keep convincing places you work to buy ‘x’ plugin to get a job done.
When they talk about Max being used in movies, it’s a little about someone on the red carpet talking about what coat hanger they used to hang their clothes on.
@steve
Let’s say Autodesk did all these. Then we will see the typical user response in various forum like this,
1.real time preview renderer ( not iray..but mental ray)
-> I use VRay. Why on the earth Autodesk waste money on this!
2.lip sync tools something like voice o matic
-> They probably bought another plugin. What a lazy Autodesk. Where is an innovation?
3.face tracking tools…either with kinect or other markerless tools with video
-> I don’t need this.
4.full sculpting tools would be nice
-> I already have ZBrush. Real professional does not sculpt in max.
5.phantom points
-> Finally! It should have been there long time ago.
Conclusion: It is not worth to upgrade!
Honestly, 1-4 is useless for me. May I say “Why Autodesk need to waste “MY” money for such features?”.
@Well
Because you are not the only client they have. Its great that you have all those tools like zbrush and vray at your disposal but there are people who don’t.
Funfact just because you use a scultping app doesn’t mean you’ll use all the advanced features and more often than not the basics are all thats required for the job and if you can do that in your host application without need to export, it is time and money you save on the job.
A bunch of these points/counterpoints feel like we’re arguing about which areas Max should be allowed to stink at.
To take a recent argument to an extreme…if I buy Vray, Rhino,FumeFX, RealFlow, Zbrush, Motion Tracking software, and Voice O Matic, then why would I care if Max renders, models hard surfaces, models organic surfaces, tracks motion, does liquids, does smoke, fire, or helps with lip sync?
Please Autodesk, reduce Max to a user interface with no functionality – just something that I can later plug things into.
Why should Max add features that you don’t want? Because A) Someone wants them, and B) the COMPETITION has them.
B) Is the biggie now…everyone all the way down to Blender is adding major functionality that Max not only doesn’t have, but doesn’t have after AD BOUGHT the tech to do it!!!
Well: Your argument really almost boils down not to why should AD add certain functions, but why should anyone buy Max?
If you need to (as you seem to have) buy a different modeler, a different renderer, etc., then I’m not saying Max is worthless, but since you can move models from Zbrush to any package, and Vray works with many packages, Max is really irrelevant.
Thanks Jim for saying what I wanted to say just with better words 😛
@Mokiki
I did not say that was “my” response. I said that is the typical response everywhere. I absolutely agree with you. But, most loud voice people seems not understand that.
@Jim Todd
I don’t care what COMPETITION has.
@Well
It seems apparently my reading comprehension is worse than I thought. Sorry for misreading your post.
@Well: you say you don’t care what the competition has….unfortunately that seems to also be the stance of Autodesk’s Max team for the past few years.
I care what Max’s software competition has, because it is potentially a capability that MY competition will have that I won’t…because I chose to go with Max so long ago.
