Formerly a tech preview at Autodesk Labs, the software for converting photos and scans into 3D meshes is now available as free beta software for a limited time. Memento has been designed to handle large models and provides manipulation tools to clean up, fix, and edit meshes, as well as mesh analysis and diagnostic tools to fix errors and optimize and output files for the web or 3D printing. More on Autodesk’s site.
Limited time indeed…. they have already ended the “free beta”.
Working fine for me (sorta). Clicking the “Try Momento” link at the top right is a direct download.
I still dislike having to upload pictures to create a 3D model, relying on their cloud for the computation. This will end up being one of those services where you’ll have to purchase credits to create your model. I’d prefer to do it locally, so I don’t have to wait in a queue as I am right now. If it would create highly detailed, and accurate models, and I could install and do the computations locally, I’d purchase it. Right now, people are waiting hours in the queue, before the models are even worked on. And if there are errors, you won’t know until you get through the queue line. At the least, there should be some kind of integrity check locally before the photos are uploaded. I get that creating this 3D is computationally heavy. But waiting 4-6 hours, sometimes longer, before the model is even started… my workstation could have had the model done easily by then with other software.
@Badbullet:
try photoscan. The new version is very good! And it uses CPU and GPU for computing.
