(Update) The page has been removed by Autodesk, the information can be found on Microdesk.com.
Changes are coming to Autodesk Subscription Prices and will come into effect on the 28th of March 2013. While the article is a bit vague and uses quite a bit of marketing jargon, it seems like they will go up considering the bit “Act Now” being a part of the banner headline. Last time they increased the price, 3DS Max users were not so happy about it so it’ll be interesting to see how customers react once the new prices are announced. Read the article on Autodesk.com.

More irritated about the flat rate upgrades. 70% of a new seat regardless of the version is a joke.
What did we get for subscription last year? another old plugin bundled (which most particle users would already have) and getting shortchanged on another old plugin because we weren’t their extra-special creation suite friends.
We won’t be happy at all, but we’re prisoners of an uncompetitive market, and Autodesk know it.
I guess it ends here for me…
Allready having difficulty to cope with the subscription rate now, and the price difference between US-customers and non US-customers is also killing the market.
I’m going to search for alternative options like blender and other ‘little’ company’s that have decent support.
I do not like being pushed towards a new subscription before a certain deadline.
I have been using 3D (Studio) max since the DOS Version.
It has become something like an extended body part for me.
I still love the software, but since the time when they split it into max and design i have become increasingly unhappy with their management decisions.
I am sure they are under a lot of pressure from their shareholders who are looking at short term profits.
But no professionel is using a 3d software for only one year.
The best thing that could happen would be to split max and Maya into a privately hold company.
Then they would be able to make truly long term decisions and keep their user base happy.
If they continue on this short sighted course they will start loosing even long term users like me.
They gave other companys a lot of time to catch up.
I was really surprised when i looked at Cinema4D, which i always considered to be something like a “hobby” 3d software.
But that was 5 years ago and it has become really powerful.
I could even continue using vray.
That will make it easier to convert some of my assets.
Making the switch will take some time but sooner or later it will be necessary to leave Autodesk behind.
I feel really sorry for Max.
I still like it but this company will just wring money out of it until it dies.
Hey Tammo,
same situation here. I was a 3D Studio user from version 3 under DOS. But I did the jump to cinema 4D R12 two years ago after whitnessing an NDA Session with Shane Griffis at EUE. After that, I lost my last hope for 3dsmax and it was clear that I didn´t wanted any other product from autodesk ever.
So now I am with maxon cinema R14 and I am very happy with it (like I was with 3dsmax 1.2). C4D is rock stable and a joy to work with. And the maxon guys knowing what they talking about and they are responsive.
I saw a similar one a year or so back, and it didn’t fill me with optimism – I’m going to another one with Frank DeLise tonight, just to see if the roadmap has altered, although with the change in pricing it’s going to make upgrading pointless for 5 releases anyway.
But yeah, if I’m going to plonk down a couple of thousand, C4D looks like a much better bet – who would have thought not being an Autodesk product would be such a selling point?
This thread here sounds like some damn group therapy – we are sitting in circle and outing our darkest secrets:
“I started using Modo…”
“Me C4D, since yesterday I can eat and sleep again…”
“I have bought Houdini Starving Artist License, i feel today much better!”…
I am trying since years to change to other 3d software, each time it costs me a bunch of money and time, and like the last addict, i always come back to Max. And the collection of bought 3d Apps in my shelves is growing and collecting dust 🙁
No escape.
I went to Houdini and highly recommend it. I don’t think 3dsMax users understand how much better other applications are. They are addicted to point and click features. To the point that they can no longer think independently on how to solve a problem.
@Mat: I think that’s a very condescending view of 3DS Max users, bordering on elitism. Most experienced, and very talented 3DS Max artists I know pump out very good work and few of them are so pigeon-holed that they haven’t checked out other software such as Houdini with an open mind. It’s the kind of attitude I personally resent. The notion that 3DS Max and its users are dumbed down is an insult to all the great work that’s been created using the software.
I am beginning to learn Houdini as well when I have the chance between projects, and I enjoy it, but it isn’t as black and white as you suggest and it definitely does not reflect an artist’s 3D IQ.
@Igor: It’s because you miss Max Underground… 😀
Jokes aside, it surprises me to see many ex-Max users are still following MU.
Guys, according to my reseller, subs pricing is not changing for 3ds max standalone, neither for maya premium suite.
This is at least in Spain, things stay as they were.
Contact your reseller to check if your price raises or not,
Cheers.
yes.. because 3dsmax subscription prices went up allready.. i think half a year ago.
