The Blender Foundation has released a significant update to its open source 3D software. New features include: enhanced Alembic I/O, improved PBR shaders (based on the Disney principled model, making it compatible with Substance Painter, Unreal Engine and Renderman), denoiser, “Filmic” color management for better handling of HDR, Shadow Catcher, various useful additions to Grease Pencil, new modeling and animation tools, fast OpenCL rendering on AMD GPUs and the incorporation of a number of add-ons in the base application, such as Dynamic Sky, Archipack parametric modeler, Magic UV, etc.
According to Blender Foundation’s press release, Blender’s free and open source development “is blooming as never before”, thanks to the contributions from its users as well as from the dozen full time developers that work on Blender and its Cycles render engine.
