ExodoDW on the state of the CG Industry
What are the advantages of producing CG in Mexico?
The main advantage is the quality vs cost ratio. We can’t compete with Asia regarding costs, but we have other clear advantages in comparison, such as our time zone, geographic proximity, connectivity, roads and transportation that facilitate the coordination of projects with various countries.
Regrettably Mexico has had some bad press due to the increase in organized crime, but thanks to the net this can be fortunately put aside, since most of the work is done through online meetings and collaboration. And if there’s need, we have the added advantage of being able to take a plane and being in Los Angeles, Miami or Vancouver in a few hours.
What are the things you like most about Mexican culture and Mexico itself?
Mexico is a spectacular country. Creativity and visual richness permeate the whole place. You can find the most creative solutions to all kinds of problems, and this is very valuable when at a certain point one may not have the ideal material, economic or human resources.
Mexican CG workers are very capable, focused and committed. In our sector, there’s always a tendency to look for ways to improve and excel. All this helps local institutions, too, since they are pushed by the artists to improve their CG-related courses .
Any funny or interesting anecdotes from your work at Exodo?
Our day to day work at Exodo is a lot of fun. We’ve organized tournaments of COD, pool, darts, etc. This has allowed us to build a group where people understand each other well. Also, some of our illustrators draw cartoon versions of unexpected situations that take place at the studio. Such as when Paco Zamudio took the habit of disconnecting monitors if they were left on and he became the Monitors’ Elf. We’ve had lots funny situations at Exodo.
What pending debts does the studio have?
To keep growing as a studio and attract challenging projects that make us push the quality bar always higher.
Anything you’d like to mention that we haven’t asked you about?
Exodo is always looking for talent and new projects. So we’re open to receiving demo reels and budget requests at any time.
