here’s the thing about open source apps; Blender, Pencil +, GIMP and so on. They maybe GREAT apps but can I get a job with them? Blender pops up once and a while as a required skill set but is always for a non paying gig. Hence my big question.
Is it worth the time spent learning OSA’s? Isn’t that time better spent learning what studio are using?
It’s a good question. I’d say time is better spent acquiring the skills you want/need, sometimes not directly related to software. Of course, if one’s goal is to work at certain studios then it’s certainly a good idea to learn the 3D tools they’re using.
Regarding 2D apps, they aren’t that difficult to learn, and since they usually keep the metaphor from Adobe UIs, learning open source apps or Adobe’s doesn’t make much of a difference.
On a more “macro” view, I’d say learning another app is always a good idea if one has the time, it’s like learning another language. It helps stretch one’s mind.
