MIT researchers have developed a programmable pipeline for printing multi-material objects that is inspired by RenderMan and modern GPU pipelines. It aims to overcome several computational limitations that current 3D printing technologies face, and will help enable better replication of real objects. OpenFab supports procedural evaluation of geometric detail and material composition, and offers a streaming architecture. Only a small fraction of the final volume is stored in memory and output is fed to the printer with little startup delay. More on MIT’s website.
