VideoLAN announced the release of the latest version of their open source cross-platform multimedia player. VLC plays most multimedia files (H.264, MPEG-4, WebM, etc.) as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols with no need for codec packs. It also functions as a media format converter. New features in version 2.0 include:
– Faster decoding on multi-core, GPUs, and mobile hardware – multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM.
– Support for more formats, notably professional, HD and 10bits codecs – ProRes 422 and 4444, AVC/Intra, Jpeg-2000, DNxHD/VC-3 in 10bits.
– New rendering pipeline for video, with higher quality subtitles, and new video filters to enhance your videos.
– Support for many new devices, including BluRay Discs (experimental), SDI capture cards and QTKit devices.
– New resamplers for higher quality audio.
– Reworked Mac and Web interfaces and improvements in the other interfaces.
