New features in the latest version of the low-cost painting and VFX software includes brush stroke preview, a rewritten text tool, a visual recently used documents list, the ability to save frame sequences from Puppyray, and several GUI improvements, including mip map scaling and refinements. Industry News
The 140 employees of Aardman Animation have been given a 75% stake in the business by founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton because. Aardman, of course, is best known for its stop-motion franchises Shaun the Sheep, Wallace and Gromit and Morph but also augments stop-motion with CG as in The Pirates! Band of Misfits! as well as producing full CG productions like Arthur Christmas and Flushed Away. According to Sproxton, the reason for the move is because" [...] we love the company and because we love it we think this will be the best things for it. This is not about David and I leaving. It is a continuity deal." He continues, "if we sold Aardman it would just become an asset on the balance sheet to be traded. They could say, let’s turn it all over to CGI and shoot it in Singapore". Quixel has released an update to its Bridge application for managing, importing and exporting Megascans content. Bridge 2018.5 includes new live link integrations for 3DS Max, Houdini, Toolbag and improvements to Maya and Unity. These plugins enable the user export assets from Bridge with pre-defined materials, geometry setups, and displacement support in a simple click. (more...)

Software - 3DS Max
A new beta version has been released of the open source renderer aimed at animation and VFX. Version 2.0 includes several significant improvements to the core including improved subsurface scattering, NPR shaders, and new visualisation tools. The plugins see updates too with interactive rendering and AOVs in the Blender addon, volumetric rendering and denoising in the 3DS Max plugin and support for AOVs in Maya.
