Foundry has announced Kanova, a new sculpting tool that allows the user to manipulate and sculpt assets on a desktop in the usual way, and in virtual reality. Kanova is based on 3D Adaptive Distance Field technology obtained by Foundry with the Mischief acquisition a few years ago. It allows for the models to be made with adaptive tesselation similar to advances seen recently in ZBrush and Mudbox. (more...)

Denis Kozlov has released a proof-of-concept video for a procedural system that creates, textures and animates creatures. It was created using Houdini consisting of about around 17000 nodes with CHOP-based generators as core modules for shapes. Final meshing is VDB-based with intermediate steps that can involve polygons and or NURBS. FEM simulation is used for animation enabling a "flexible marionette-like rigging". You can find out more about this project, read the accompanying manifesto for procedural content creation and see an earlier video of a procedural aircraft modelling tool on The Working Man blog.

Luxion has released Keyshot Viewer, a new free touch-enabled desktop application for Mac and Windows that enables KeyShot scenes to be shared for viewing, presentation, and configuration. At it's simplest this can be used to manipulate a model for a client to see it from different angles, but it also allows the user to create configurators that include model, material, and environment variations. Read more on Luxion's help site.
Tutorials
Proteus VFX school has released a free hour-long tutorial on creating a snow shader for Redshift touching on topics like sub-surface scattering, nested procedural displacement, reflection/refraction, materials blending and more. This tutorial is part of an ongoing commercial course called Redshift In Production that costs $140.50 or $69 for students. Watch the snow shader episode on YouTube and find out more about the contents of the course on the Proteus VFX School website.
