Epic Games acquires Bandcamp
Epic Games has announced that it has acquired Bandcamp, the well-known online marketplace, community and publishing platform for independent musicians.
According to the announcement, Bandcamp will continue as a standalone platform with no immediate changes to the existing products and services, however, Epic will work with Bandcamp to expand internationally and improve development.
Although we’re used to seeing CG and games related acquisitions from Epic, Bandcamp appears on the surface to be a less obvious fit. Several of its other acquisitions like Artstation and Sketchfab have shown a sustained interest in moving into established online communities and marketplaces. Bandcamp’s undoubted popularity will give them that same foothold in the music sphere and “play an important role in Epic’s vision to build out a creator marketplace ecosystem for content, technology, games, art, music and more”.
