Chaos has made V-Ray available as a fully integrated renderer for Blender, marking its re-entry into the open-source 3D software. This release gives Blender users access V-Ray’s rendering capabilities directly within their existing workflows, without relying on third-party bridges or exports.

The integration supports both CPU and GPU rendering, along with hybrid modes, and includes tools such as the V-Ray Frame Buffer with Light Mix, compositing, and post-processing options. Blender users now have access to features like Chaos Cosmos for asset management, Chaos Cloud for remote rendering and collaboration, and built-in support for global illumination, physical cameras, and adaptive lighting.

V-Ray for Blender is designed to work with both photorealistic and stylized outputs, and supports complex scenes and large-scale production needs. It is available through standalone Blender-only subscriptions or included with existing V-Ray licenses.

If I’m reading the pricing correctly, Max users are paying more than twice as much for Vray as Blender users are being asked to pay. Do they think this is smart business?

Sure it is, Max is a totally different market segment. When you have many smaller business relying on Blender buying more licenses, in amount compared to Max, your revenue of the Blender version will equal or even surpass the revenue of the aforementioned.

Or maybe they secretly just believe in Blender more 🙂

More likely they know that Blender is free and mainly used by kids and hobbyist and squeezing an extra nickel out of them will be a challenge.

It’s not that the market is flat, Autodesk products now come with Arnold included so why would new users choose a third party renderer?

I wish them well because I use V-Ray, however, when you cater to the low end of the market, your product becomes associated with low end. Arnold is not targeting Blender. Arnold to Blender is a plugin created by the Blender community, you still have to purchase Arnold at full price to use it with the plugin.

“Blender is free and mainly used by kids and hobbyist and squeezing an extra nickel out of them will be a challenge.”…

So are you saying that they made full featured render engine available for kids/hobbyists only? Interesting theory 😁 just for few extra nickels? 😁

They did not “make” a full-featured render engine; they already had this. They only made the tool they already had available to a new segment of the market and lowered the price point for that market. They will have to wait to see how the sales go.

@Juma. Are you a hobbyist or part of a commercial studio?

What he is saying is that Blender is not part of a large established pipeline of studios large enough to make a dent in Chaos sales.

Blender is in fact used mostly by hobbyists and kids. Yes there are studios starting to use it and integrate it as a “side” software here and there, and yes there are some indie studios using it as well. But when the shit hits the fan its always the big boys like Max Maya and Houdini that are the pillars even in many of those smaller production houses. Even some with outdated tools, but the fact that you can rely on those outdated tools to get across the finish line is a testament to those tools and engineering.

As much as i appreciate Blender it irritates me that this wasted opportunity will still be the case for years to come, given the stubbornness of blender devs and their design choices for the software that will delay this integration further.

The industry should NOT adapt to a 3d software late in the game, rather a 3d software should adapt to the industry standards.

Chaos here is simply looking for extra cashflow ina rising market. Hope they find it. Because the vast majority of blender users are freeby free riders to whom Cycles and Evee would be sufficient for their daily needs.

This is the very definition of a flat market. Competition with real time engines is fierce, and Chaos can’t survive on its existing users forever. They need new subscribers, wherever they come from.

I don’t believe they would have made the pricing decision without due thought. The render market must be flat at this point and Chaos needs to open up to new markets.

When you buy Vray for Max you get access to Vray for everything- Max, Blender, Maya, Unreal, etc. However, when you buy Vray for Blender that’s all you get- no access to other integrations. I think they just recognized that Blender users are less likely to use other DCCs as well and they want to grow that market.

this is by far the best renderer for Blender. I see this tool with new eyes with V-ray. Of course, Cycles is cool and very capable but this wipes it all out.

Thanks for the concern. We’re still here but the current state of online publishing makes it a tricky place for a legacy news site. Successive google updates have been well publicised for hurting small sites, added to this the fact that more and more people get their content from social media (and now AI) have hit our number quite hard. As a result it’s been much much harder to attract advertisers. CGPress has never been about making money, it was always a labour of love for the community, but we used to at least cover our server costs. Unfortunately, it is now costing us money to keep the site online, so we’re taking a moment to pause and reflect on how we want to proceed.

On the other hand – it’s encouraging to see people still commenting here. We will do our best to keep posting and apologise for the lack of updates recently.

maybe you could make one of those “buy us a coffee” buttons on the website so people can easily donate you as much as they want. I really hope this can help you.

Would you be able to tell us what your server costs are? There’s a lot of smart people here that may be able to offer help or present options for you to consider.

Every morning I open a number of sites in different tabs. This is one of them. Agree with the “buy a coffee” button, if you keep the site updated!

Maybe a focus on niche CG news? Or more author-oriented perspective as an explorer? See what competition is missing to attract attention? I like CGPress, good luck!
