Pixologic has announced the release of ZBrush 2021.7. New features include:

  • Knife brushes that allow a user to cut through a mesh in a precise line and then close the surface
  • A Stage tool that allows the user to store two transformations of a mesh and switch between them.
  • A Bevel tool.
  • The ability to interpolate between two brush strokes to create patterns.
  • A Mirror feature that allows the user to copy PolyPaint and masking from one side of a posed mesh to the other.
  • AdjustLast which allows the user to tweak the last action rather than undo and try again.

As always, ZBrush upgrades are free for existing license owners. Find out more on the Pixologic website.

Still this stupid interface…… Pass

Is the UI still the worst UI known to man?

It is still the same UI. For people like me it is one of the best UI´s because it is so easy to configurate it to your own needs. And you have to keep in mind that it is designed for Pen/Tablet Users. I have always the feeling that Mouse Users don´t get that feeling.

The UI was not designed out of “Design” purposes per say for the purposes of what zbrush has become, Zbrush in its early stages wasn’t even considered for sculpting but rather some 2.5D “fun” app. Mudbox was the king back in those days. When it got upgraded and Weta contributed they simply got stuck with that UI and forced all users just to adapt to it and so it is what it is today with some improvements and push and pulls. It’s not as bad as it used to be but its still pretty abnormal as far as UI’s go and the way you do things in general.

The only incovenience I see with it, is that any newcomer from a regular 3d app will probably take some two weeks to get the hang of it with a few curses in between every once in a while (I heard it personally from every new artist using this software) meanwhile something like Mudbox would take them a few minutes, but sadly Mudbox is now only found in the abandonware folder of Autodesk.

Thats the bottom line to the whole UI story with Zbrush.

Zbrush was 3d sculpting app before Mudbox. Weta was using mudbox , not Zbrush. Your timeline is a ‘little’ broken. Interface is centered around tablet navigation. What is annoying it’s functions spread in strange places, the rest is great.

I think you twisted what I said troll,

I mentioned Mudbox was king back in those days and I don’t know where you get your info but Mudbox was killed off soonest former Weta (And Weta because they were using it in production and providing feedback and improvemnts) were bought off by Autodesk. During this time Zbrush was lagging behind Mudbox.

Mudbox now out of Weta’s hands, tuned its focus on Zbrush, both ILM and Weta collaborated closely with Pixologic to make an emerging sculpting software the leading sculpting software in the industry today.

During this time they made no effort changing the interface (tablet or not) which i find a ridiculous excuse BTW because that would imply all software including photoshop should now look like Zbrush to be efficient for tablet use!

The point is by the time Weta and ILM got to it, it was too late to change the interface, because during production you have no time to change interfaces and just focus on functionality.

Therefore we are stuck with a retarded UI for better or worse.

I don’t care, I got used to it long time ago but that doesn’t mean its still isn’t retarded.

You dont navigate in 3d space in photoshop. Zbrush is centered on doing everything in 3d viewport with pen in one hand. Simple and efficent. What is annoying it’s many functions in strange tabs. Like fbx import export in plugins…etc. Mudbox was never years ahead of zbrush. It was always much less effective with high poly meshes. What was better and still is in mudbox it’s texturing. And it was Skymatter not Weta who sold Mudbox to Autodesk. If Autodesk was’nt stupid they could be where Substance Painter is today with mudbox texturing. They were too slow with implementing dynamesh and zremesher equvalents. And lack of any marketing. Then they decided to incorporate mudbox to Maya, fail and stopped with updates. I dont understand. Mudbox is more future proven than zbrush, it will get faster and faster, as it’s based on GPU, not like zbrush and it’s strange engine. They can’t even implement real lighting, shaders, realtime shadows etc in zbrush.

I get you, I still disagree about the interface and Mudbox was an inside tool at Weta officially and unofficially they made it to work on LOTR and later the ex-employees created Skymatter and the rest is autodesk shittery.

Mudbox would’ve been more like Mari far ahead of substance if they invested in it, but who are we kiddin here. This is Autodesk we are talking about, the shitfest of the industry’s universe.

Mudbox was an inside application then went public and then was sold to Autodesk which never really cared for it except some spouts of activity.

I remember the first zbrush version, with his new “pixols” tecnology. Was fun to paint and change lights direction. 3d back then was a “curiosity” of the program.

The problem is when you only need to use ZBrush now and then, a couple times a year. I feel like I have to learn it all over again, every time. It comes back, but isn’t something I can just pick up where I left off like other programs.

That’s perfectly the problem indeed.

I know what you mean. I have also watched YT videos twice to know again how this one button was called again. I can only give you the tip to create your own menus. It is really not difficult and then you come back faster.

Yes, it is. That’s been yearssssss everybody tells them it is horrible to use.
Even my friends that are pro ZBrush artists hate it lol.

Only a small portion of fanboys is happy with it, and Pixologic think it’s enough.

This is a very rare example of a company being so lonely in their domain that listening to feedback is useless for them. I hope one day they will regret this attitude.

ZBrush is abandoned by Autodesk, they don’t develop it anymore, Use Mudbox it’s new, and Pixologic updates it very often.

Yeah, ZBrush the famous Autodesk software..
And no ZBrush is not new… there are plenty of issues/limitations with it due to its old codebase.

Actually being rude is not welcomed here. I am not an AI and you better watch your language.

Hey Moly Poly why don’t you accept your mistake and swallow that pill and correct yourself instead of crying about hurtful feelings.

If you think what he said was “rude” wait till you get out in the real world.

Edit: If you are an AI then you are a living proof why people shouldn’t worry about AI taking over the world anytime in the foreseable future.

what mistake does he/she say? he/she just asking did I miss my medicine in an arrogant way.
What about you, I have nothing to say you both prove that you are just rude persons with zero professional communication skills who can’t explain where I was wrong but only abusing.
I am not crying my mate only you are showing your real faces.

Its called take a hint, its called bro talk, its called many things. At this stage I suspect you are a minor or a very inexperiuenced person in life.

I wont blame you if you are.

The fact that I have to point out to you where you were wrong just proves the bafflement we are all facing here.

Bottom line is kiddo that Zbrush = Pixologic – Mudbox =Autodesk. Nothing was Abandoned by anything and you seem to have mixed up so much misinformation with so much more and then denied the fact that you have or are.

You acted arrogantly when questioned –
People got pissed and now you call them hurtful and rude!

You understand now? And why did I waster 30 seconds of my life typing this I wont ever know.

It feels like Zbrush hits the end of the road, nothing interesting happened for a long time now…the last few releases brought absolutely no exciting features.

this is called a monopoly, when their natural competitor killed himself (mud), they have relaxed.
I think Ofer Alon must go immediately. Z needs a new breath

jesus, what a bunch of nonsense.

sculpting has become ubiquitos and is a feature in most 3d packages.(c4d, blender, maya, modo..)
there are viable solutions for ipad even, not to mention adobe medium, sculptris, meshmixer, coat, sculptron..

the truth is that pixologic is simply having diminishing returns.
they are fully featured as a sculpting program so new ground is hard to break.
what they actually should to is streamline and trim the workflow not add to it.

ffs you guys seem to be conditioned to see everything as a video game, expecting major update drops to get your dopamine going.

For someone that doesn’t complain about the UI, this is a welcomed update. Some cool features and still free for registered users.

It’s true, nothing groundbreaking, but it’s a minor update. Other companies have lots to learn from Pixo
