Researchers from various Japanese universities (Tsukuba, Utsunomiya, Nitech, Tokyo) have devised a method for rendering aerial and volumetric graphics using high-intensity lasers. The vibrations of the energized air molecules can be sensed by human skin (according to the researchers it feels like sandpaper) and contact can be detected, allowing for interaction. Current rendered shapes are small but the paper states that the size is potentially scalable. Watch some videos and find out more on the project’s page.
