Alicevision – open source photogrammetry framework

AliceVision is a new open-source photogrammetry and computer vision framework for 3D camera tracking and reconstruction. It was created as a collaboration between Czech Technical University,  IMAGINE,  Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (INPT), Simula Research Laboratory,  Quine and Mikros Image.

The team are also developing cross-platform app MeshRoom, an open-source 3D reconstruction software created using the AliceVision framework. You can see a video of MeshRoom workflow on YouTube and find out more about the software on GitHub.

Also of note, 3D reconstruction company Scanbox has been putting MeshRoom through it’s paces, and has just published their initial findings. In their tests they compare MeshRoom with the commercial solutions Reality Capture and Photoscan. The open source alternative is found to be slower currently, but the team conclude that for the early days of an open-source solution the results are encouraging. Read the review on Scanbox’s website.
