Disney and Epic Games announce collaboration on new games and entertainment universe
The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games have announced a collaboration to create a new games and entertainment universe. This venture aims to extend the reach of Disney’s stories and experiences. As part of the agreement, Disney will invest $1.5 billion for an equity stake in Epic Games. This multiyear project is subject to standard closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
This new universe will interoperate with Fortnite and is designed as a persistent world. It will provide various opportunities for consumers to interact with content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and more. The universe will enable players and fans to create their own stories and experiences, express their Disney fandom, and share content. This platform will be powered by Unreal Engine.
The relationship between Disney and Epic Games is not new. They have engaged millions through Fortnite content integrations, collaborations, and live events. Unreal Engine has been instrumental in creating content across Disney’s portfolio, including video game development, cinematic editing, animation, and even in designing Disney Parks attractions.
This collaboration builds on Epic Games’ participation in the 2017 Disney Accelerator program, which focuses on impacting the future of technology and entertainment.
