Disney release a complete island scene from Moana for “research, software development or education”
Disney Animation has released two interesting datasets licensed for use in research, software development or education. The first is a large detailed volumetric cloud, but the second is particularly interesting, it includes the complete island from the film Moana.
The data is as close as possible to that used in production but modified so that it can be used without requiring Disney’s custom tools. According to the accompanying documentation, “The scene ismade up of 20 elements containing meshes with more than 90 million unique quads and triangles along with 5 million curves. Many of the primitives are instanced many times giving rise to a total of more than 28 million instances of everything from leaves and bushes to debris and rocks. When everything is fully instantiated the scene contains more than 15 billion primitives.” Geometry is
The entire data set is broken into three packages :
- The raw data necessary to render just one frame is available in the “Base” package.
- The additional animation data necessary to render the entire shot is available in the “Animation” package.
- A translation of our data into a format that can be used by pbrt is available in the “PBRT” package. This can also be generated from the “Base” package.
You can download the files from Disney’s website, and read more about the assets in the accompanying readme file.
Thanks for this, would’ve missed it otherwise – I’m going to have some fun with that cloud file, looks really good.
I applaud this great initiative to release some real production scenes – very informative and potentially very useful to drive some industry decisions by showing what is relevant for such productions. Also makes for a great benchmark.
