Gumroad limits file sizes of free and $0+ items to 25MB
Gumroad, the popular microtransaction site that has made it easier for artists to set up shop and sell digital assets, has introduced a policy change limiting the file size for items offered for free. Any item that is provided free, or under a pay-what-you-like scheme that starts at $0, is now subject to a 25MB restriction. Any item offered at $1 or greater retains the same 16GB per file limit (and multiple files are allowed in a single transaction). Some artists are already circumventing the restriction by selling a link to download a file that is hosted off-site.
There does not appear to be an official announcement about the change, but you can read more about hosting products on Gumroad’s website.
Cubebrush will be very happy with this change.
Well, it’s kind of understandable, and if Cubebrush was in their position with so much popularity, they’d probably have to do the same. Gumroad folks want their site to be a store for digital content creators who want to sell their creations, not a free data hosting service. It’s understandable that if many individuals upload dozens of gigs of free content each, out of which Gumroad gets $0, and then this free content gets downloaded often, that traffic ultimately costs something. No one wants to bleed money.
