Turbosquid rolls out StemCell format conversion

Turbosquid rolls out StemCell format conversion

Turbosquid has announced that StemCell format conversion is now live for its community, enabling the automated creation of assets in formats compatible with popular DCC applications and renderers. At launch users can upload a single model from 3DS Max with V-Ray or Mental Ray, Maya with V-Ray or Mental Ray, or Cinema 4D with Physical Render and automatically create versions that support all of these combinations, in addition to Unity and Unreal (provided metallic maps are also supplied). Future updates plan to add support for Arnold to the existing formats as well as Blender with Cycles and Lumberyard. Read more about StemCell on the Turbosquid website.

It’s sad to see that Modo isn’t even in the plans.

I wonder how significant it is for the industry.

I thought .FBX and Collada were supposed to be the exchange formats of the future (back then) between apps no? Seems we’re taking a step backwards with a new fresh file format..

FBX is Autodesk’s proprietary format and they are abusing this fact in favor of their own software. Collada is 13 years old format that received its last update 9 years ago, when standards and needs of the industry were very different. Given these circumstances, I can not see how could you possibly call efforts to invent a modern exchange format a “step backwards”….?

With that being said, I think you probably misunderstood what StemCell is. According it the Turbosquid site, StemCell is a set of standards and guidelines to adhere to when you are creating asset for their store. If you then successfully meet StemCell standards, they are able to automatically (without manual work of any person) convert this asset for other softwares and renderers, so you can reach a lot larger potential customer base, sell more models, and obviously, TS will also make more money.

Hey Ludvik,

I’m just wondering if you could let us know why do you think they are abusing the FBX standard?

I am not in any way defending AD, noup, I dislike the company’s business branch as much as anyone else and for obvious reasons but I rarely hear that particular statement.

Cheers dude!

It’s not really an exchange format, more a convention that you follow so they can do the reformatting for you. They just want to knock down the silos between assets so customers have wider choice and sellers a wider market (and they increase sales volume). If you use turbo squid that sounds like a step forward.. Join the discussion
