Unity has announced that it is to acquire Weta Digital, specifically its tools, pipeline, intellectual property and engineering talent. The VFX team will spin-off and become a standalone entity to be known as WetaFX. Read the full announcement on the Unity website.
Damn where and how did Unity get the money to do this, weren’t they in some sort of financial trouble some while back?
This is big news, I wonder if they will now give off their software for commercial use.
But then again if Weta was up for buys what the hell was Autodesk doing not buying them off or Epic for that matter?
To answer my own question I think Facebook had a hand in this plus half of it was in stock it seems. But still this is a big move.
compare unity ceo and vice president with weta chairman haha.
this news is really strange to me but i’m bad for business.
With the tech for games and movie FX increasingly converging (or at least cross-pollinating), I think it makes sense. Plus Epic has made some moves to diversify its scope. All signs that real-time is maturing and beginning to realise its potential.
