New features in Autodesk’s sculpting and painting software include:
- Sculpting Falloff options – you can now choose Volume or Surface Falloff options for brushes, in addition to the default Hybrid mode. With Volume Falloff, anything within the brush radius will be affected by the brush stroke, regardless of whether surfaces are connected or not. Surface Falloff mode gives you more control by using the center point of the brush to determine the area affected.
- Relax Brush – use Constrain to Surface in the new Relax Brush to even out spaces between vertices while only making minimal changes to the original shape of a mesh.
- Twist for Grab Brush – the Twist feature in the Grab tool helps you twist all vertices within the sculpting brush falloff radius clockwise or counterclockwise. Use it to create swirled objects like soft serve ice cream, rotate ears and eyes on a character’s head, etc.

this thing has no chance against Zbrush (although i like MudBox very much)
To save it life they should have bundled it with Max…
i’m not sure the intent of mudbox is to stand against zbrush. If so, then it’s not on a very good track, not at all
PS i too love mudbox very much
C’mon AD, seriously? what do you guys do all year?
Looks like Mudbox is on the same path as Softimage, it’s too bad, I really like Mudbox.
I am a Zbrush and Mudbox owner. All I can say comparing those 3 new Mudbox features compared to zbrush 4r7 is ouch! AD really has to find a better way to make apps evolve after acquiring them or it will shoot itself in the foot in the long run.
This what Autodesk really is, they can’t compete with anything. all they can do is buying and then killing competitors.
The strangest thing to me is how Pixologic is able to add so many features in such a short time period, without charging a yearly fee, while Autodesk takes so long incorporating features into all its software generally speaking (there are definitely some exceptions). The bigger the company, the slower the progress of its software it seems.
There’s a post from Shane Griffith (ex-PM of Max, now PM of Modo) on a thread about Max 2016 and he was impressed that MCG was developed in only one years, given his knowledge of how Autodesk works (and it leaves the impression that it’s a very cumbersome process at AD).

i have thought about getting mudbox a couple of times – texturing in zbrush is not the best thing. however doing a bit of research paints a very bleak picture.
i tried to keep an open mind still but this release is pathetic. straight up pathetic. i´d love to hear the argument on how this software is not dead.
Why Mudbox? F**k ADSK and their unjust pricing, software and complacency.
Go with ZBrush and for texturing 3D Coat (16k) and/or Substance Painter (but only 4k for now). And it’s dirt cheap if you buy second-hand licenses!!
Mari isn’t an option either (pricewise).
that is pretty much exactly what i did.
apart from the 3ds max sub extortion i am obliged to cash out for, i really do not think i will ever invest in autodesk product ever again.
Space Navigator from 3D Connexion is a great asset for sculpting. If zbrush supported it, I would love to migrate to it. A hunch tells me that it is not wired to ever connect to this device, but keeping fingers crossed.
For now, 3Dcoat seems to offer the best package for sculpting and re-topolgy with the Space Navigator, however recruiting artists who know this may be an issue.
