(Updated) Extension 2 for 3DS Max / Design 2015 is now available for customers on subscription. Autodesk has also posted two additional videos covering new features: Dual Quaternion Skinning and Camera Sequencer.

3DS Max Product Manager Eddie Perlberg announced that for the first time a second extension will be released for the same 3DS Max / Design version. New features brought by the extension will include: dual quaternion skinning, camera sequencer, templates that provide standardized start-up configurations, design workspace that follows a task-based workflow and easier Revit and SketchUp import. The new extension is expected to be available around December 17th for subscription customers. Find out more on Eddie Perlberg’s blog.

So let’s see, what do we have so far –
Quad-Chamfer, Scene Explorer, Alembic Support, Open-Subdiv , Dual-Quaternion Skinning, Camera Sequencer.
What started out as a disappointing release might just turn out to be the best in a while.
Also excited about the Template system.

As they said this was more focused to archviz. The template system I dont get it, its not like opening a 3dsmax file? I hove that they include again the “send selected objects to active layer” inside scene explorer, and correct existing bugs on it. But congrats for the overal job, will be exciting to see whats in 2016.

If you save a file as Maxstart.max into your project’s scenes folder, it becomes the default scene anytime you load or reset 3dsmax.
I guess the template system is like having access to various maxstart.max files at any time.
Doesn’t seem like much, but it could help save a few steps.

Is this same camera sequencer the same as the Prosequencer script? The skinning is the most interesting part for me.
Think Positive!

The camera sequencer looks like JDB’s ProSequencer.
The dual quaternion skinning looks like XrayBlendSkin.
The template system looks like a few days worth of scripting work.

This is not criticism, all three are welcome additions.

The camera sequencer looks like a camera sequencer…
The dual quaternion skinning looks like dual quaternion skinning…
The template system could have been better, but this is what a few days of scripting look like…

Autodesk chose a wrong direction of 3d max development.
3d max MUST be not a just a rendering studio like now, but much more.
For architecture we have a Modo and Cinema 4d. For FX- Houdini. For animation- Maya.
For WHAT AD convert one of the flexible (in past) software into the WORST one?
AD – if you want a good sold of 3d max – listen Users.
We want first of all
1) Complitly new skinning modifier. Like it in Maya 2015
2) Completely rewrite a Edit poly modifier
3) Completely new Unwrap modifier
4) Animation in Max just a horror. Do something
If you continued a way as today – you lose a last your users.
Even in a FREE Blender have a better tools than in 3d max

why do you need a completely re-written poly modifier and honestly, max unwrap tools are really really nice. agree with animation part, but as you said earlier, For animation, you have maya.

I can’t wait to compare Houdini 14 to the next Max. Right now I am assuming it will just be more promises and “just around the corner” but would love to be proven wrong…. houdini 14 is looking fabulous

This isn’t bad at all for an Extension release, of course the well they are implemented remains to be seen, but if that Camera Sequencer works the way it should I’d say that alone was worth it.

That template system also looks very useful, I’m curious to what degree we can customize each template, what things will stick in there, but if it works the way I’m hoping then it can be a great workflow system and a big time saver.

The Dual Quaternion should make life much easier for the animation guys but as I’ve said before skinning can be improved even further, just look at the work that one guy(Kamil Małagowski) is doing in that direction.

That new Ribbon system looks really nice, but what worries me about it is that I feel the more you invest in it the less likely you are to go for a QT interface, but I’m not a programmer so I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt on that one and would just hope you realize how much Max needs a unified and fast interface.

That was my 4 cents, I’ll hold on to the rest of them for now.

For me, Camera Sequencer is just a camera switcher, Prosequencer script is much better and powerfull….
I’m desesperate

Come on Autodesk, add some more useless crap and ignore the fact that max is rotten inside, made of plugins you bought and left to die behind and that 90% of stuff still uses 1 processor thread to process data. I’d advise you to take a look at Houdini 14 features, so just you know what “in sync with the technology and time” means. I suppose it’s time for you to finally hire some programmers, because selling licenses of a 90’s software doesn’t work anymore.

ps: 13 years of progressively painful Max experience, moving to Houdini and never coming back.

this is good stuff…basically more stuff to us faster.

the skinning thing is the biggest little add on to arrive…the other were already available for free or took a couple of days to script (template) 3ds max 2016 need to be a HUGE leap forward to convince me to catch up on subscription i didn’t pay this june.

get serious or it’s bye bye

Maziar

@rps… Everything else aside, one thing about your comment particularly caught my attention, how can your experience be getting “progressively” painful with Max? Max’s development definitely hasn’t progressed at the pace or the way many of us had hoped for these passed few years, and I agree even this team hasn’t done a head turning job(yet at least), but it has gotten MUCH better throughout these years, both performance wise and feature wise while becoming much much more stable compared to previous versions, for someone who has used Max for the last “13” years, you should know that better than most of us, one would imagine.

As a Max user, there are a lot of things I want to say right now about how things have been done for the past year or how things are looking in the horizon for Max, many of which aren’t that positive, but I’ve decided to hold off until the 2016 release, because there’s a part of me that hopes that this team maybe finally working on some fundamental issues for Max, that would clearly show their unconditional commitment to Max, things that would impact Max’s future 5 years from now(a modern interface done right could be an example), or things that would actually be considered pioneering instead of just hasty implementation of features that have been in other packages for years, those are the type of things that tells me they are truly committed to Max’s future.

I’ll end my thoughts on this release with this quote from Eddie Perlberg in his interview with fxguide after he took over(just a reminder of things that’s been promised):

““No more is a feature going to be developed and then left alone,” says Perberg, “that is one of the things we are going to focus on … to continue to grow those things so that they continue to provide more and more functionality, and not just they launch with, ‘Isn’t that cool’, and then they get thrown to the back.””

Yes we definitely wouldn’t want that to happen, any more.

strangely the extension shows up as installed in the application manager.
cant seem to find new features though

Eddie Perlberg

Lazer,
The service Pack was released at the same time as the Extension is being installed with the Application Manager. For now, to get the benefits of the Extension release, you will need to download it using your subscription account and install it manually. We are hoping the Application Manager is updated soon to accommodate the extension benefits.

have to say….
one skinning improvement and 5 ArchViz improvements explain well where autodesk wants to push 3dsmax

please stop to do do this to max…move it to multithread and make it finally shine adding the best tools on the market!

soon all the modelers will start to work in zbrush or modo..all the rigging will be done in maya and all the fx will be done in houdini

you point on the archvizx market and for that but you will loose the race couse there are really cheaper softwares for do that a no one will pay a max license anymore…you are killing your most promising son!

make max shine in VFX field! make it become the best application for modeling, UW unwrapping, rendering and FX!!!! as it naturally is going to evolve thanks to the huge contribute of users like Bobo or Kresimir or Cebas guys or Chaos Studio guys!!!

we love max and don’t want to jump into houdini or blender or modo
we want to be proud of max!!!

so they`ve fixed the disappearing icons in the UI then ? because it would be rather odd to add a bunch of new stuff without fixing obvious bugs like that ?

I guess they did. It didn’t happen after installing SP3. I didn’t have much time to play with it though.

Earlier this year i was lucky enough to attend an event showcasing what autodesk and others were offering now and what the future “might” look like. I signed an NDA, so there’s not much i can say.

I saw demos for maya and max. All i can say is if you use maya the future looks great, it looks like a piece of software moving with the quick progress that technology gives us. Now, every max demo i saw went like this: open max, then either take or bring something into another program. Honestly not one demo was about just max, it was how if you want to do certain stuff go use something else. Maya was exclusively used, because why use anything else?

Unfortunately thats the impression i have of max and the future, a program that you use with other stuff because max doesn’t do it or do it well. Additional If you do arch/viz and use max looks like you’ll be happy.

Anyway i loved max, but something tells me its time to move on.

Also while i’m here venting; Autodesk please do not buy the foundry.

In Max defense … you can do a better job with 3ds Max + FumeFX + RayFire + ThinkingParticles than Maya default. It’ll be fast, easier and better.

But I do agree that Max has to improve. Mostly on performance.

MauricioPC

These ones are okay, for sure. It’s better than the Maya Extension (even though Maya already had some of these features).

“1. OpenSubDiv support
2. Alembic support
3. Enhanced ShaderFX
4. Dual Quaternion skinning
5. Camera sequencer”

For me Max needs better performance (even better than now), multithread PFlow and a proper dynamics system. Like … Maya can make proper cloth, fire, smoke, they have a good instancing system, hair that works better and they are getting BiFrost.

We need something similar or BiFrost.

I can’t leave Max because of the wealth of knowledge I get from other Max users, but we need this improvements to not be watching the other guys lawn all the time.

Ok i think i was too much negative but the love i feel for this software brings me frustration in these last years, especially when i see that the industry keeps talking about maya as the best and about max as good for archVIZ, this comes mainly by Autodesk Communication!!

I’m pretty sure that the MAX guys are doing a great job and all their efforts can’t be visible right now…probably we will really enjoy MAX2016 so let’s look forward to see good improvements in the next release

I know that there are guys that are working hard to make this software shine!
keep it coming!!

I think max 2016 will be last chance for Autodesk . Many users in this version will choose standing or leave the software , specially etertainment industries users .
