How sad. He did not work on it but wants to get attention.
Haha yeah i thought it was a bit odd to listen to someone talk for over an hour about visual effects for a project they didn’t work on. Everything is an assumption since he has no clue for sure which is a matte painting vs what is 3D. Normally he puts out much better content.
On a side note, im not sure how legal it is for him to show video scrubs on the content on Youtube. Seems like a bit of a gray area in terms of legal.
I don’t see why not. He has enough experience to explain how he thinks its done.
It’s as valid as film criticism or analysing editing. No-one bats an eyelid that it’s not the director or editor for those.
Not really a grey area. In a sane world this is a no-brainer fair use example, especially since he isn’t just playing the episode start to finish. Youtube’s content ID system isn’t really sane though.
Let him do his thing. It is hard to see a person to put his own time in just giving the idea he thinks and tutorials, besides that, he is a VFX supervisor working for tons tons of movies, a lot of experiences, better than most of us. From what I see, only him still keeps doing free VFX tutorials to mentor people and, there are a lot of knowledge in it.
Copyright, He is a supervisor, you think he did not consider about this before he released the video? Also look those videos, they are very clear, you don’t think he obtained legally?
Come on guys, no need to be so harsh. Yea understandably he is assuming things but that’s fine, at least he is not speaking entirely out of his ass, unlike some “FX artists” on YouTube commenting on things and all they can point at are “Oh green screen was used here”.
Sure he is a big time showman, I mean hell even the intro to his podcasts sounds bombastic with the “Allan Mckay show!” I always have a laugh at that but its harmless and kind of over the top, then again trust me half of Hollywood FX guys are showmen and others divas. In Allan’s case at least he makes it worthwhile and enjoyable by making these podcasts and interviews and giving something back to the community. I commend him for that.
I just miss the good old days of VFX back during when CGsociety was a thing and small teams made big and ambitious projects and when front pages really mattered.
Things were more low key with every new thing being a breakthrough. Maybe i’m just nostalgic that way, part of the reason why I started moving into game dev the past few years and less VFX work.
this is just him promoting his training courses in the cheapest possible way, using something that is very popular now like GoT
FYI, he has worked on GoT.
Then he should do a presentation on those episodes he worked on. Not ones he was not even part of.
This may be an unpopular opinion but someone has to say it.
While Allan has done quite a few good things, like sharing a lot of information and free material, let’s face the other side of his fame: he only talks about himself, about how great he is and how amazingly he progressed in his career.
His videos are boring, you need redbull in order not to fall asleep. Years ago I joined one of his courses and he would only post the videos online and ignore every question in the forums.
He creates a podcast where he interviews people, but he is proud to say the best episodes are the ones he talks on his own. He talks about how he paid a house in cash, because he works so hard. Well, maybe he paid the house with the money he got from the courses where he ignores students…
He has done a lot for vfx but it feels like those days are gone.
Yeah I couldn’t agree with ya more. The way he presents himself is a bit arrogant I do find that he toots his own horn quite a lot and it gets old after awhile. It’s not all about money. I’ve seen talented artists making tons of money as well, but do you see them going around and gloating. For anyone familiar with Andrew Kramer of Video Copilot, he is humble and more fun to listen to. You never hear him bragging about money. He talks about art and creativity. I stopped listening to Allan years ago as his stuff became redundant.
Yeah, i think it is a cheesy review. I’d rather just watch someone review it who actually worked on the show than someone who wishes they did. It makes Allan McKay look desperate for attention.
