Mudbox joins the list of Autodesk’s software acquisitions followed by discontinuations that includes Combustion, Softimage, Smoke, ImageModeler, etc. The digital sculpting and painting software was originally conceived by artists at Weta Digital, while the studio was working on the film The Lord of the Rings. Mudbox’s developers founded Skymatter in New Zealand and later released Mudbox 1.0 in 2006. Autodesk acquired the company’s assets in 2007.

While its competitor ZBrush (and later 3DCoat) continued to evolve at a rapid pace, Mudbox’s development stagnated in later years. The reason for discontinuing the software, according to Autodesk’s site is “due to no significant feature enhancements since Mudbox 2019”.
