Epic on the Unreal Engine short film – Hard Day’s Night

FXGuide has published an article going behind the scenes of Hard Day’s Night, a short film to promote the upcoming game Fortnite. The 132 shot animation was created by Epic using Unreal Engine. The production demonstrates the use of the real-time engine’s ability to combine traditional CG approaches with new Cinematic tools that were created especially for the project to tell a story. According to the article the film marks 3 significant improvement to the engine, including a new Alembic workflow for importing animated faces from Maya, in game fluid-based smoke simulations, and an overhauled sequencer that’s part look development tool, part editor and part play out device.
