Back in the day FumeFX was the bread and butter of fx. I wonder if it’s still widely being used when so many people have begun using Houdini for FX work and Phoenix. So many options now.

I will say though this version of it, Node Based looks pretty awesome.

Yeah, I don’t know if it’s too late with TyFlow as well in the mix – but it’s an interesting move – I was expecting them to go the GPU sim route like Embergen (even with its hardware limitations)

Feels kind of like what Autodesk have been dangling as a carrot for years

I can’t remember how many times I have emailed them to be able to purchase a non-commercial version for learning purposes. All I wanted was to study that with the pletora of Allan McKay trainings that I have through the years.

The reply was that it wasn’t possible. Honestly? I don’t really care anymore … with Houdini apprentice around and the Indie version so cheap, I have moved on.

Wow interesting to see that it’s still being developed. But honestly I think it may be too little too late, I doubt anyone is using fumefx anymore. Looks cool though

In my own opinion, there’s to much Houdini talk regarding VFX. Houdini is a great application, but with a very high learning curve and to complicated for easy effects.
FumeFX, PhoenixFD, thinkingParticles and tyFlow got you well covered when using 3ds max.
@MauricioPC – I don´t think that SitniSati have a non commercial version available, at least as far as I know, then it´s hard to sell you one 🙂 But if you in your mail talk friendly, explain in detail your situation and so on, they might be able to help you, worth a try. They always been very supportive and friendly to me, but yes, I own a commercial version.

Hi Stefan,

I think they have a student version but I’m off school so I wouldn’t qualify, hence why I email them. I was always friendly as it’s a request, not a demand. They are within their right to deny that as they usually do.

But I do believe that this mindset against something like houdini, that has a free apprentice version is limiting their product. It’s been a while since I passed by a studio that wants to use Max + plugins for FX. And I agree with you, it’s more than doable and the quality is there. But I also think they’ve lost a bunch of customers that way.

For example, I was able to get a Cebas TP student license asking for the same think. They were nice and I payed for a 3-year cheaper license for learning.

Yes, cebas is very friendly and nice people, always been and hopefully always will be.
It must be way better to sell you or anyone else who ask them friendly and have a good explanation, other than not to sell anything at all.

Regarding SitniSati, I didn´t know they had a student version, if they do they for sure have demands on them that each license they sell must be proven by a student ID, if not, they can´t sell even if they wanted to. I´m not 100% sure of how it works, but I at least expect something similar, but at the same time, there must be ways around it for developers, if they really want to help that is.
Right now FumeFX 6.0 is out on public beta, so go to their forum and download it and try it on 🙂
