Hmm which is preferred? The new Fumefx, Phoenix or Ember-gen for generalist?
Phoenix can do both fume and water very well and plays nice with vray, if u get tyflow then ur covered. This recent funefx version does seem very good, but the market has become competitive. Embergen is only good for more stylised smoke and fire, honestly doesnt come close to the grid resolutions either fume or phoenix can pull off so its not a replacement for either.
The new Embergen v1 is very good plus they are showcasing their sparse solver which looks promising – I don’t really see it as an either/or, depends on what you require for a particular scene and how quickly you want it
I have both FumeFX 5, Phoenix 4.2 and Embergen
The speed of Embergen is exceptional, but PhoenixFD has fluids, and the new FFX is sitting somewhere with TyFlow like features
Depends a lot on your needs, also you’ll need a decent GPU for Embergen – a 3080 is decent, a 4090 would be even better
I you want one tool that does it all and does it very good then FumeFX is your best choice. Embergen is fast but the sims look odd.
Released shortly after Embergen, how’s that for timing
Personally I would of much preferred GPU accelerated fire and smoke sims.
Embergen is its own thing it cant do what fume or phoenix does. And gpu accelerated smoke will probably require a fomplete rewrite of code and frankly may be very limited. I have only seen one houdini plugin do it very well.
