We wanted to let you know much of the work for the new forum is ready (thanks to collective preparation) and we’re currently studying various forum software to settle on which one to use. If anyone has administered a forum that runs on PHPBB3, MyBB or Xenforo we’d like to hear your experiences, and how light they’re on resources in comparison.
Fantastic, looking forward!
great news! Hope to see it online soon !
I run a phpbb forum. Not sure about the resources (we’re hosted, and low on traffic), but I find the software to a bit bloated and old-fashioned compared to what we need. I suggest you also take a look at Vanilla, which feels a lot more modern:

Looks nice but 500$ a year is quite a lot… There is also an open source version, but with all the spamming and hacking problems mentioned in the other thread, I think an included service is essential.
Maybe Pablo should set up an Paypal account to see what users want to contribute financially.
I was one of the founder of the german mental ray forum and we made this with phpbb. I can not compare it to other forum software but for me it was good to work with. You can customize it and you have a big community for support. Maybe you can contact the new admin from that forum and he can say you more, because he is a good programmer.
Many thanks for the advice and suggestions. Matt Guetta recommended me to check IPB. I took a look and it seems quite good. It’s commercial, though, and around the price of Xenforo.
Matt also has experience with PHPBB and says IPB is considerably better for admin purposes.
I think one of these choices should work well. The important thing is to install one that can grow well in the future (and not force a migration later on, as Matt probably had to do from PHPBB).
