Natron is an open source node-based compositing software that relies on OpenColorIO for color management, OpenImageIO for file formats support, and Qt for user interface. It’s available for OS X, Windows and Linux, and offers 32-bit channel precision as well as support for OFX plugins. The project was launched in 2013 at Inria, a French national research institution, by Alexandre Gauthier.
According to Alexandre, the idea behind the project is to foster diversity in audio-visual production and allow small-budget ones to make films with tools that have similar capabilities to those from the industry.
Development has been progressing steadily, with many new features added with each release. Watch the Natron SIGGRAPH teaser video and find out more on the latest release on Natron’s website.

Great to have an alternative to Nuke, especially one that is Open Source. Nuke is very expensive for a small shop, and has a license that prohibits you from using it on multiple machines – so ANY kind of competition is great. But this looks so similar to Nuke that I am afraid they will get shut down due to copyright reasons! I hope they can do a slight redesign, and not risk being gone within a couple of months!
Haha wow when you said it looks like nuke I was like.. yeah sure.. then I watched the video. If you showed someone who doesn’t do compositing a video of nuke and this, they actually wouldn’t realise you showed them 2 different programs.
Not a very clever decision from Natron…
