Amsterdam-based Paleo Pixels has recently finished two projects for the new Wildlands Emmen Zoo in the Netherlands. The first one took two years of work on 25000+ m2 of artificial concrete rockwork design, the second one is an animated dinosaur mural.
Artificial rockwork
The artificial rock-work is an imporant part of creating a believable experience. Paleo Pixels’ job was to scan the 1:30 rocks in 3D, provide insights for the teams doing foundations, landscaping, etc., and to generate the inner constructions for them. Most of the inner constructions are based on profiles. After the initial phase where both bending by hand and bending them automatically (with Python and a steel-bending machine) were evaluated, the choice was made for bending them by hand and the company set off to create in Maya the Python framework to convert the 25.000+ m2 square meters of rock-work into profiles for teams from mostly Spain and Portugal.

Dinosaur mural
This project was done for Jora Entertainment: a dinosaur mural in the Wildlands Terra Explorer. In a small building in the Nortica section, visitors step into an elevator and travel down into the earth to visit a prehistoric world where dinosaurs still live. For Jora Entertainment/Leisure Brand Factory, Paleo Pixels worked on the visuals of the dinosaur part of the video: matte painting, 3D and compositing.
