Redshift switches to rental only licensing

Aug 30, 2021 by CGPress Staff

As previously reported, from today (August 30 2021),  Maxon has ceased the sale of Redshift perpetual licenses in favour of monthly or annual rental.

The announcement gave the following reason for the change: “Cutting-edge technology and performance requires agile development and delivery. Redshift’s functionality is fully dependent upon third-party hardware and software solutions. In order to maintain compatibility with the latest hardware, drivers and host application updates our Redshift development team is constantly updating, optimizing and ensuring stability. In order to provide the best customer experience, we believe all customers should be running on the latest version. ”

Pricing information is now available, with annual licenses available for $264, and monthly licenses for $45. Redshift is also available as part of a Maxon One subscription that includes all of their products for $1199 annually or $149 monthly. You can see the prices on the Plans and Prices page and read more about the decision in an FAQ on the Maxon website.

I guess that it was expected since Cinema is only sub now. But it’s unfortunate for other users, specially Houdini ones that can still buy permanent licenses.

If things continue down this path only blender will make sense. I can only imagine during this pandemic where things got sidetracked and I bet people had to let some subscription lapse.

you can bet your bottom dollar things will go on this way and yeah i agree. situations such as these will highlight how crap of a system this is.

Easy, Karma will return to them for that move 😉 I mean Houdini renderer replacing RS. Not yet, but in 1-2 years for sure.

sound more like excuse.. hardware is upgraded when its needed and so should be software as well.. i think this is becsuse they want stable income .. thats only reason: stable profits. And fear of cycles-x and eevee (or eevee-x?) 🙂 well.. the blender is the reason why they do this and stockholders who need/want fast profits they dont care from their customers opinnions. Good that epic invested for epic (they own part of it, small share) So maybe there is future were blender and Houdini rule cgi with unreal ❤

And good that i left c4d few years ago when they got this greedy ex-adobe worker to theyr ceo he has ruined maxon totally. And best thing was blender 2.8-3.0 its new ui and the speed of development. And open plans as the particle and physics nodes plans they were talking: https://code.blender.org/2021/07/nodes-workshop-june-2021/

i left when they announced rental too. 21 is my last version.
i choose cinema while ditching autodesk because i was lied to by the head of their marketing worldwide. he assured me there was no rental coming in the future. when i called him out on his promise i got the:
we assure you…yadda yadda…our customers important to us…bla blah.

i dont doubt these are garbage people, but what makes you think maxon is ruined?

Blender is the reason they did this? Lmao, what is wrong with Blender users, you’re all so obsessive and delusional.

Typical victim role. Want to feel special and “sticking it to the man”, not feeling like one of the masses. Same thought process of conspiracy nuts. It has to do with not wanting to take responsibility for their own actions (not that this subscription thing is their fault, but it’s being “done to them” for reasons).

edit: Besides, didn’t you know that paying for things is bad?

I can’t even be assed to care anymore, I let my last maintenance renewal lapse because Redshifts development speed on v3 since the Maxon acquisition has become so slow it’s borderline non-existent, every update it nothing but bug fixes while the new features just sit on the horizon, never coming any closer to fruition. I’ve been waiting for this inevitable transition to just move on from Redshift entirely.

Yeah, I thought it might be ‘oh maybe they are being a bit more thorough with bug-testing now they’re part of a corporation’ but no.

I mean, they fixed stuff quickly, but you’d have three releases with bugs that you think would be picked up.

And I’ve no idea why they were spending so much time on metal when the 3D market for Apple seems pretty small in comparison.

Too much ‘jam tomorrow’ with aspects of 3 and RT

Well, like most of the companies does sadly, they all go to subscription based sooner or later and they all claims that it´s for the best of the users because they can fix bugs and get new stuff added faster, but to all the plugins I use, that never happens. To be honest, the only plugin developers that actually fix things and implement new stuff on a regular basis is cebas, VRay and Corona (all for 3ds max). To me, Redshift is a no go, not just only because of the subscription, but the lack of compatibility of thinkingParticles, FumeFX and more…
Good luck to Maxon, I guess they need it 🙂

I’m sorry: “Five-License Minimum”?
Does that mean the license is $264 annual (which is ridiculous since the entire 3dsMax indie is $299), but you have to buy at least 5?????

Your comment makes no sense. This is a render engine, not a DCC. FYI, Redshift is also available for Blender.
