Simulating plant life in Houdini

Illusionhills has posted a couple of great-looking tests of foliage simulations created in Houdini. The first shows a wind animation on a single palm frond and the second show the full tree with shaders.

Not sure about that.. (in case you’re being serious, there are ways to get alembic working in older versions of max. Anyway thanks to all this alembic talk I now had the idea to get hold of some Belgian lambic beers for my next beer night. Cheers!

It’s animated in Houdini, exported via alembic to Max and rendered in fStorm.

Well, where is this thread going to?
Do not mix up things…fstorm is a renderer for 3ds max – nothing more. This scene was animated in Houdini. You have to read all the comments under the videos on vimeo.

I know that Andrey Kozlov is the developer of FStormRender. As his website tells…

FStormRender is a new GPU powered, unbiased render with good performance / quality trade. It is very simple, fast and realistic with convenient materials and light sources.

How do you animate trees with FStorm when it is just a renderer?

this is from an old changelog:

FStormRender v0.8.2g
Changes since v0.8.0b:
• Wind Modifier added

easy, you can add it in maxscript by typing:

modPanel.addModToSelection (FSWind ()) ui:on

Vray is just a renderer too but it has many modifiers. same with FStorm.

I’m pretty sure the wind effect was set up and simulated in Houdini. After all, the point of this is to show Houdini’s toolset and its simulation abilities.
Pretty sure you can’t get that in Max straight out of a modifier without any rigging and physics sim.

Some innocent people still thinking that TROLLS only exists in Nordic mythology and Scandinavian folklore.

yes, the norwegian movie TROLLhunter used an early alpha version of fstorm to animate and render those evil nordic TROLL creatures. great work.

Well someone here tries to be an illusionist but it’s not a piece of software.

Or rather, modeled in substance painter, animated in mari, textured in uv layout and rendered with nCloth in Houdini
