VirtuCamera – new iOS app for capturing camera animations
VirtuCamera is an as-yet-unreleased iOS app and Maya plugin that promises to allow the user to create camera animations like they would with a real camera. Currently available for Apple devices, it captures camera motions and connects it over Wi-Fi to 3D software which records the movement as keyframes.
Features include the ability to change cameras at any time, set and record focal length with a slider, scale camera movements to travel longer distances, lock camera translation for any axis and more. To visualise what’s being recorded, the 3d app’s viewport is streamed live with frame rates of up to 60fps.
To connect the app to a 3D app, it requires a plugin. Currently, support is only available for Maya via an open source plugin written in Python. Support for other DCC apps is promised in the future.
At present, the application is in beta and no pricing details are yet available. Find out more on the VirtuCamera website and you can read more about how a Gremlins fan film was made with the help of VirtuCamera in an article by Ian Failes on Cartoon Brew.
