Pixologic has announced the release of ZBrush 2019, a significant update that adds several new features including:

  • Folders are now available, allowing users to group and organise SubTools. Actions like  Scale, Rotate, Duplicate, Delete, Hide/Show PolyPaint, Live Boolean and more can be applied to an entire folder.
  • A new Universal Camera that enables the user to match the focal length of imported photographs and 3D renders. Is is also possible to export or import the ZBrush camera settings for use in other 3D applications.
  • A new Non-Photorealistic Renderer to create 2D drawing and illustration effects.
  • Snapshot3D, an updated version of Spotlight, that retains the original features and allows the user  to convert any grayscale image into a 3D model. Source images can be modified or combined through Boolean-type addition or subtraction to create complex 3D shapes.
  • Updated ZRemesher with several improvements including better preservation of sharp angles and more efficient topology.
  • A new plugin called Intersection Maker that allows the user to generate masks where subtools intersect.
  • A new plugin called ZColor that allows the user to manage and share colour palettes.

ZBrush is available under a perpetual licensing scheme for $895.00. This release also sees the addition of subscription-based licensing at $39.95 a month or $179.95 for 6 months. The update is free for current users.

I’m not too crazy about the new subscriptions.. I know shocking right? If you sub for 2, 3, 4 years, after that you have nothing to show for but usage.. Would of been nice to have an option to own the software after the price of the sub would match retail.. Unless Pixo starts charging for every updates moving forward (after your one free update runs out)? What’s the point?

If Pixo had added a rental-to-own like Allegorithmic had before, I would definitely get it.

Where is the DAMN Linux version we want for more than 10 years ?!?

And they better not say it would be too expensive after releasing again a new update for free.

I really appreciate companies that offer such a good update policy, but when it means shitting on the other side on the whole VFX/Linux community, I say no.

I have a feeling that the core architecture of Zbrush was never meant to work on an operating system like Linux, its kind of like the 3ds max story. They have to entirely rewrite the software perhaps.

Also for the record, Zbrush has always been that retarded kid on the block with its UI and the way it does/refers to things: “Load/save tool”, “UV master”, “Scale Master” I mean seriously, who the hell comes up with this shit!?
But what can you say for a software that looks like it started out as mid 90’s power goocomment image

Everyone is rejoicing that they finally got folders in the layers structure, yes Folders! After 10 years!

God It was painful to switch to this program but what can we do when Mudbox was decapitated by our most beloved corporate entity in the world.

1. Works perfectly in Linux using wine
2. Zbrush has a pretty nice UI 🙂

There’s still 3dCoat. I tried learning zbrush several times and always forgot all the little quirks and strange workflows so I got annoyed with zbrush and tried 3dCoat. It’s not perfect, of course, but it does everything I need and I can leave it for a couple of weeks or months and not have to relearn everything from scratch. Zbrush is great for people using it 8 hrs a day but not for the occasional user.

Totally, I have to go through a few hours of tutorials and reading forums every time I need to use it, which admittingly is only a few times a year, but still. It’s a weird bird.

This was exactly the thing i was looking for with this release, they even had a teaser of it somewhere.

If that can’t add proper UV editor in 1 year, even as a plugin that looks like taken from different software, then this proves how really poor software architecture ZBRush has. This is sad, as the software is great itself.
