Pixologic has disclosed the new features of the upcoming version of its sculpting, painting and detailing software. Highlights include support for vector displacement maps, real-time Boolean system, improved LazyMouse functionality, transform gizmo similar to other 3D applications, multiple languages support, etc. Also of note, Pixologic has given further details on the feature set of ZBrushCore, its lower-priced version of ZBrush.
In anticipation of the 4R8 release, Pixologic is currently offering ZBrush 4R7 at a 20% discount through October 3rd, with immediate digital download and a free upgrade to ZBrush 4R8 when it’s out. ZBrushCore will also receive a 20% discount for all pre-orders between now and its release on October 14. These prices are only available through the Pixologic store.

Looking forward to that gizmo. Always a great update from pixologic however I find their naming very strange. Shouldnt we be on Zbrush 5 by now?
Vector displacement, impoved lazy mouse and especially live booleans (Modo has also one of the best boolean systems available ,the revolutionary Meshfusion, inspired by Groboto I suppose) are even more great features. Most artists are so used of the transpose tool in zbrush. It doesn’t make any big difference to them. Gizmo is easier for new users to grasp.
Groboto was actually bought up for implementation into Modo. The live booleans are also my favorite new feature in Zbrush 4 R8.
Transpose is cool sometimes I wish I had something similar in max, but I always wanted both.
r7 was originally going to be the last one before 5.
I’ve no idea how they define what’s a point release equivalent – some of the R7 stuff would be a whole release by some other companies.
But I’ve never had to pay for an upgrade, and the UI is weird, so having something else unusual from Pixologic is well, normal 🙂
I don’t think so. You can change the UI however you like and it’s so used by the industry. For indies and students there is now the simpler zbrushCore. Two major weak points are retopology and painting. Many artists use 3d coat instead for this. So these are two areas where zbrush should be improved.
Maybe they’re planning a major UI revamp.. And the gizmo is just a snippet that was relatively easy to port to 4.8. Their UI while it might work smoothly if you use Zbrush day to day (rightly or wrongly) I find it a royal pain to settle into after a few months break.
Great! Now ZBrush is just 20% less out of my reach! 😀
I just leveraged the opportunity with the 20% discount, and I´m happy, now I wish they won´t charge me for the 5 release 🙂
Cheers.
Here’s hoping that v5 will revamp and add support for 3Dconnexion 3D controller. 3Dcoat has supported it for a long time, and it makes sculpting and navigation a simultaneous treat!
