Developers who presented a paper last year describing an “implicit skinning” technique for creating more realistic skin deformations have continued to work on the project and have recently presented a new “elastic implicit skinning” method. This method simulates skin contacts between limbs as well as the effect of skin elasticity. In addition, it doesn’t require the definition of skinning weights.
According to the researchers, elastic implicit skinning takes the best features from the implicit skinning method and makes it robust for extreme character movements. The authors state that if someone is interested in the technology they are open to collaborations. Watch a sample video on Vimeo and find out more on the elastic implicit skinning project page.

Wow! This is amazing tech. Meanwhile, Max still doesn’t even have native dual quaternion skinning. You make it hard, but I still love you, Max.
