The folks at Chaos Group have hinted at one of the new and improved features in the next release of V-Ray. They have been working on a new adaptive method that is much better at achieving consistent noise levels across the whole image and in different sampling situations. This helps to reduce the amount of time users need to spend on tweaking render settings to get a cleaner render. For more details and a complete explanation on how it works, you can read the thread at the Chaos Group forums. (Registration required)
