Chaos has released a video introducing Project Arena, a new solution designed for virtual production on LED stages. The project promises to benefit the virtual production pipeline by leveraging the capabilities of Chaos Vantage, an existing  standalone tool for real-time path tracing. According to the video, Project Arena has been in development for over a year.

The development process involved rigorous testing, from proof-of-concept stages in the Chaos office to real-world applications on production stages. These tests were crucial in identifying and resolving practical challenges, such as software distribution across multiple machines and real-time scene adjustments. Through collaboration with partners and continuous refinement based on real-world feedback, Chaos aims to bring Project Arena to a broader audience soon.

Very weird.
We already have Unreal for that and it doesn’t require back and forth with DCC.
But maybe renders from Vantage will be higher quality?
Well the renders they showed are really bad – not even close to what’s necessary to fool audiences – we produce better results with UE every day.
And the renders themselves were really grainy – you can see how the denoiser is flickering even though the background is extremely out of focus.
If the end game is to produce realtime photorealistic renders, than Vantage has a loooong way to go.
This presentation would be impressive if UE 5 didn’t exist, but unfortunately it does.
I think it was way too early to make this project public, because as it looks now – it seems very inferior.
Really weird presentation.

I think you need to look into the big picture.
There are many artists working with VRay, Corona.. Etc and don’t like or even hate the move to unreal engine because of its unpleasant workflow and all the work you need to do to put to get good results. Especially for mid and small studios where the workflow is more artistic than technical.Targeting those is smart move from Chaos imo.

Oh I don’t have a problem with that. Just the presentation itself. It’s way too early. It’s like a company boasting to have created a smartphone – single core cpu, 2mp camera and 320×240 color touch screen. It is impressive, I myself can’t do that, but it’s just that, we’ve already had that a while ago, and now we use smartphones that are just much better.
