With the goal of bringing Museums’ sculpture collections to the public domain, various projects are following the trend started in 1994 by the WebMuseum and employing currently available 3D scanning and printing technologies to make 3D data of historic sculptures freely available to the public. Check out the results of the Metropolitan Museum’s MakerBot Hackathon as well as Cosmo Wenman’s replicas from the British and Getty museums. Output quality will no doubt improve as technology advances.
