Unity Technologies has released the latest version of its multiplatform engine and development tools. New features include: Progressive Lightmapper preview, new Light Modes, Vulkan support, updated Particle System, improved graphics performance, new video player, support for Facebook Gameroom, Google Daydream, etc. Unity is available through rental and pay-to-own licensing (the later is an option for those renting Unity Pro for a minimum of 24 consecutive months). More on Unity Technologies’ website.
The real thing here is that while you can own it, and that is good, you can’t pay in advance to own your license for those 24 months, so you have to keep paying month after month, and if you fail one month, then you have to start again.
For the deal that they made for the long term users they dod not say that, so I fall into that deal thinking I was able to pay in advance for those 24 months and after all was ready I asked for the invoice to pay all and they told me NO, YOU CAN’T PAY IN ADVANCE…
So while they are not completely lyign, they are treating the users in a similar way Autodesk does, that’s why we’ve stoped using Unity and migrated to Unreal, but that is not strange since the actual Unity CEO nearly drives Electronic Arts to it’s EOL with his “rental” and “subscription” ideas, now EA is trying to recover itself, if you know something near the top heads you will be able to know all the story.
So, what a pity again, but their behaviour is dishonest and unethical, and I don’t work with dishonest and unethical companies, it’s a pity that not everyone think about this as a decisive matter.
I know, I know, you will tell me I’m always saying bad things… yes I am… as a Spanish singer would say “malos tiempos para la lirica” my friends.
Cheers.
You do well Juang3D, keep the fight.
Thanks LL!
🙂
Solid release!
Same here,
We’ll stick to our 5.6 licenses that we already paid for and we own them forever,
we’ll finish some project we started with Unity and we are slowly migrating to Unreal.
Nice move Unity, I have to say it… I told you so!
I knew Riccittelo would screw up Unity, I knew it!
We´ve already migrated everything to Unreal Engine, we have to maintain Unity just because we have to give support to some apps we have for some clients, so we will maintain our license for 24 months to have in our hands the latest version and after this 24 months we will stop support for those apps and everything will be done in UE, in fact every new project we do is in Unreal Engine.
So… good bye Unity.
