Ho boy what a game changer!!!! I’M buying houdini right now!!!
just to note that the indie version of Houdini does not support 3rd party renderers
Didn’t used to but it does now.
I am very happy with Houdini Indie. But If Sidefx changed its policy to allow 3rd party plugins, that would be very welcome.
lol, a bit late, everyone is using Arnold, Prman 19/20 and Mantra. why do we need Vray? well, we don’t.
Actually this is perfect to make more Max users leave Max, since most of Max users know and use V-Ray well.
Everyone? Or you just the “elite”?
Vray is as capable as the other renderers you mentioned — spoken from extensive experience with all. Mantra especially is only good at a few things, I personally wouldn’t put it in the same league as Arnold and Vray. I personally also feel that PRMan is still very much a TD man’s tool. With Arnold and Vray you get all the flexibility of PRMan but with the added benefit of user friendliness.
On a side note, some artists seem to feel that “user friendliness” means less professional.
You’re correct, I wouldn’t put Mantra in the same league as Vray and Arnold. I would put it up and above both of them.
Arnold is a black box, and will always be that way. Its driven by a purist ideology, not by production needs. (having used it on several large feature films) VRAY is almost equally a black box, but Vlado is great at listening to user requests at least.
Mantra, when it comes to flexibility and functionality is hard to beat. Having resorted to it alongside Arnold renders. Along with the license scheme. Why not main stream adoption of mantra ? Tied with Houdini, and IFD isnt a publicly documented format. Still, I’d take mantra over pretty much every other renderer when it comes to feature work.
What…even Mental Ray?! :-p
Then why when it comes to lighting and rendering environments and characters do almost all studios choose the other three and not Mantra?
Btw, your “fancy” nickname, take on Yancy, was really funny (and unnecessary when you’re having a civil discussion).
Horizon is far 🙂
And I agree, who need in Houdini product that used by student, arc viz and some other “home made” stuff? Do you want work in Houdini and render scene with lack of technical skills? So, might be you better choose 3dsmax and “make it beautiful” button?…
Vray is black box, and even not close to Prman and might be Arnold, this is even not comparable things. And not Redshift3D make difference… ~30x difference with Vray.
