Autodesk has announced 3ds Max 2025.1, just a few months after the initial Max 2025 release.

The Array Modifier has received updates for faster processing, with speeds up to 250% quicker depending on the complexity of the geometry used. Additionally, animatable random number seeds have been included.

The Boolean Modifier now offers improved volume-based meshing. The Voxel Size adjustment has become more precise, with a minimum value of 0.001 and dynamic warnings for low values. A new abort mechanism using the ESC key has been added to interrupt processing, which is particularly useful for long or unintended operations.

The Paint Weights tool now includes new parameters for better control when using Shift + Alt to brush skin weights, addressing previous issues of oversensitivity.

A new OSL shader, Turbulent Color Noise, has been added. This shader can create effects such as oil slicks and can also be used to drive custom ramps with its Float output.

The update also includes MAXtoA 5.7.1.1, featuring Arnold 7.3.1.1. Enhancements include updated denoising with Intel Open Image Denoise, improved MaterialX and OCIO support, and API support for viewport display of procedural curves. The Arnold RenderView has been updated with new snapshot functionality and is now dockable by default. The Intel Open Image Denoise has been updated to version 2.2.2, offering better performance and handling of high-frequency details. Additional enhancements include improvements in light linking on custom procedurals, tooltips for Arnold nodes in USD, and support for Substance 3D Connector technology.

Color management has been improved with better handling of the Hue/Blackness box and Whiteness slider in the Color Selector dialog, and respect for color management settings after file resets. The update also includes maxscript support for the Skin Modifier, enabling easier switching between painting mode and bone selection, and an update to Python 3.11.8, which includes many security fixes.

For more details on these updates, visit the Autodesk documentation site.

I am still waiting to see one day a study published on Autodesk business practices and motivations, i need to know the secret, what is this incredible phenomenon? How does it function and to what purpose? Please someone enlighten us!

The top leadership roles there likely suffer from the pigeon chess complex. This phenomenon is more common than we realize.

So glad the Blenderboys are here to save us from Autodesk again! Surely this time we will switch to Blender (we will not).

Softimage was good but a dead end. A giant DLL.
But there is no excuse for the way Autodesk deal with Softimage.

That said the Blender developers in their own bubble trying to turn Blender into Houdini does not feel me with hope for the future either.

I remember massfx’s promise to be a unified simulation system, I don’t remember the year, 2012 maybe?
Then the arrival of fluid simulation and the promise of implementing bifrost.
Also the arrival of MCG, an excellent idea abandoned at birth. 2015 maybe?
At that time, Max’s team showed us a hopeful road map.
But first they had to clean the code and rework it to have a more powerful core to be able to implement these features in a solid way and not patch… I think they have done it today, Max is much more efficient and faster, polygon modeling today is the most powerful in the industry, there is no doubt, but progress must be made in the major shortcomings of Max, animation tools, unified physical simulation system, etc… if you want to implement small improvements, make a good on-screen measurement system like scketchup does it, isn’t Max versed in architectural visualization? Max doesn’t seem to define what industry he wants to be in.

Luis, Polygon modeling today I still can’t:

1 – Use the cut tool without bugging out
2 – topology tool-set still does not have weld vertices (I have to weld manually). ITs been what 10 years now?
3 – Loop tools are lacking.
4 – No proper conform tools out of the box i have to install a dozen MCGs to get to a place i can start working.
5 – UV is as slow as can be and UV sets an organizational nightmare to work with.

CGP did not publish the news, but here is the free Packer-IO, that we have done exactly for UV Channel management:

Here is the video how to organize UV Channels:

There was no 2024.3. 2025 was disappointing. As a reward you got 2025.1

sure: its called market capture and minimal viable product.

*also see: quarterly revenues, shareholder capitalism and ceo bonuses.

translates to: you are paying anyway so why bother.

We want REAL TIME RENDERING !! Eevee or Unreal inside max !

No no Alberto, you don’t want the two devs working on max to put 20 years to give you realtime rendering, just go to unreal for that, let them give us basic animation tools first so we can finally rig and animate properly in this software!

I’m been hoping for animation tools in Max to improve. Even something like secondary motion for CAT, which is done in InstantRig (a free plugin) with no problem. How hard can this be for Autodesk?

3DS Max updates have been jokes for most of the past decade… Legacy pipelines uses heavily scripted tools, that’s what is keeping Max alive. Customers that are locked in.
Let that be a lesson, keep your work portable.

My harddrive crashed taking the license key for my legit copy of max2014. There’s no way to register it anymore. This forced me to move to another 3d program entirely and while the transition was long, I’m very happy to move on from AD.

Similar situation with me. I have Max 2014 installed on my laptop as well as my desktop. Travelling abroad for work, I started up Max to check a file in a meeting and – bang! – there was a licensing problem. Now Max insists the license needs re-authorizing. I was also a subscriber to Max Indie (to play with personal rather than client projects) but I ditched that as soon as I returned home. No more Autodesk for me.
