3DS Max news channel

It has been brought to our attention by a number of readers that they had not noticed that we’re maintaining a separate news channel for 3DS Max, as well as other software. We would like to remind readers that news channels focused on particular software are accessible through the menu bar above, labeled “News Channels”. You’ll find a lot more news related to each particular software published on those channels.

Also of note, each news channel has its own Twitter and RSS feed. The 3DS Max news channel has its own Facebook page, too. These can be found through the corresponding icons on each page (look for the “Follow CGPress” section on the right column).

Had no idea, thanks for the heads up…

Seems it’d make sense to automatically redirect anyone using the old MaxUnderground URL straight to the Max section.

It’d also make sense to reposition the Tutorials dropdown slightly, so that moving the cursor near the 3DS Max link didn’t hide the 3DS Max link under that Tutorials dropdown. This little usability hiccup probably affects those other links, too, but I don’t know what they are and I’ve never tried to click on them.

I don’t think the old URL works anymore. At least for me it don’t.

If I could make a suggestion… I think it would be better to have the base site/feed have everything – rather the current setup where only “some” items propagate to the main feed.

I also opt for an ALL NEWS channel, as I’m using tools of different channels and overall would like to see what happens in the other fields as well…

I would also prefer that.

I’d say all on frontpage as well, or at least make a page that has all. I’d like to stay informed on what happening everywhere in CG land.

(And on a side note, if you have to make a post inform visitors there are separate news channels there is something sub optimal in the design of the site 🙂

“(And on a side note, if you have to make a post inform visitors there are separate news channels there is something sub optimal in the design of the site :)”

That’s exactly the point. One additional news post won’t fix that problem.
It may be favorable to have ALL news showing by default with an option to hide categories you’re not interested in.

Thank you for all the feedback and criticism.

The issue with having all news displayed on the home page is that we will keep adding news channels, and it would soon be flooded with news such as scripts related to specific software.

Adding news channels has allowed us to provide fine-grained coverage for each software. It’s clear though that there is a demand for an “All” news channel, so we’ll be adding that as an option for those who prefer it.

Agreed to a degree. We can tell from the site stats that lots of people were in fact reading the news channels, so they didn’t go unnoticed. It’s hard to measure how many people missed them.

There’s certainly room for improvement, though. We’ll change the design to make them stand out better.

Again, thanks everyone for the comments.

I missed that too, I thought that the upper options were to filter the specific news.

What about giving readers the option to make a simple account (or the forum account) and use it to have a number with the unread news in that section since the last time they entered in the section?

A small number, like in the iPhone when you have 5 unread messages 🙂

Cheers!

Speaking of channels, Any chance of a Maya Channel? That would be awesome.

If the list of new ‘features’ in Max 2016 is as skimpy as the leaked info would indicate, you might not need a Max channel anymore…or perhaps in 2-3 years you’ll need it about as much as a Softimage channel. I know they were brought in mid-stream, but the idea that Hudson and others were brought in and the net result is this little incremental thing…wow…

Autodesk rarely makes the news anyway, but we should be supportive to all the developers and artists as long as they do cool things…

Artists I will support with my words and thoughts. Developers I support with my dollars…. But when I spend 500 of those dollars and it’s clear that the company is doing nothing but sitting on their rear ends… Not feeling so supportive then.

New features have arrived. Skimpy?

I don’t think it’s that skimpy, and if MCG is supported via examples or extensions that are built it could be good. The problem for me is based on Eddie’s dismissive attitude about fluids and other VFX style tools. The XRef stuff is also nice but I guess that based on the complete disregard for certain features, or the apparent assumption that everyone will get those features via plug-ins, it looks like Max has sort of abandoned the VFX space to other products. I guess I imagined a different direction for features when you brought in the new folks. I am just one customer dropping off, and it looks like many are delighted so that’s cool.
