Autodesk has announced that Andrew Anagnost has been appointed as the new President and CEO of Autodesk, replacing Carl Bass who resigned in February. Anagost joined Autodesk in 1997 and has held roles in several areas including marketing, business development, product management, and product development. According to his official biography, in his most recent role as Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of the Business Strategy & Marketing organisation “[…] Andrew served as architect and leader of Autodesk’s business model transition, moving the company to become a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions provider”. You can watch Andrew’s first message to employees on YouTube and read his welcome letter on Autodesk’s In the Fold blog.

“Andrew served as architect and leader of Autodesk’s business model transition, moving the company to become a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions provider”

That’s gonna make him really popular here.

Let’s get one thing straight Andrew. NO ONE is passionate about anything Autodesk does….not any more.

So, if you like to make a better world again: resurrect Softimage.
“…. Everybody want’s to use our products” – lol. As a former Combustion/Toxic/Softimage/Matchmove user try to avoid Autodesk at all.

Thank you Mr. Anagnost for everything you do for Blender.

So this is one of the main guys responsible for trying to force artists into rental model. I wonder, how does it feel to impoverish artists, art and humanity just for increasing one’s bank account? “Let’s go out and make a better world together”. Yeah, right.
Autodesk users, this is your future for the coming years.

watched the video a few days a go and all i could think about was all the AD users who will probably start transitioning to Houdini 16 or Blender 2.8

I don’t know for huge companies with unlimited budget. But for me as a freelancer, I can use Blender, Houdini Indie and Zbrush for a lot less than only max o rmaya alone without any plugins. So freelancers who want to use Autodesk products to compete with people who use Zbrush, Blender and Houdini for example will have a hard time to compete. I personally feel that I just don’t have any choice but to leave all Autodesk products. They do less and cost more, so why would anyone used them in our field? For sure switching is long and we must invest many hours learning new tools but I don’t think it would be wise from ADSK to bet on this alone to prevent people from switching.

They’re either banking on companies sticking with it, or those freelancers having to use whatever the companies are using.

I imagine there will be a drop off in the next few years, especially by Year 3 when the subs have been increased significantly.

Their recent interviews have been so vague and hand-wavey about value they offer.

They don’t really have much, the only possible suggested being cloud rendering credits.

They don’t have the breadth of apps for AME customers like Adobe has.

Their benefits are things like using old versions, or a second version for a laptop.

I was told if you have a perpetual you are free to install a second copy on a laptop anyway – you just can’t use both at the same time, so you don’t need to be on subs or anything for that benefit. At least that’s how things stand now anyway (if this changes all I’ll do is start using blender on my laptop).

Last time I looked it was touted as a benefit of subscription, same as using legacy versions.

Called home-use rights here.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/account-management/software-downloads/home-use

It’s not the biggest deal to transfer licences via their server, just a bit of an annoyance.

The legacy thing is a piss-take though.

Maybe the new home usage rights are subtly different to the old perpetual license rights, I’m not sure… But I was told there was no need to transfer the license.. Maybe I got around messing with license transfer utility by asking AutoDesk directly. Incidentally, I suppose there’s nothing to stop them brushing an existing benefit under the carpet while touting it as a new benefit.

I think it would be great if all of you would post your opinions directly on the youtube video. Not that i think that it would change much. But i think there is a high chance that Mr. Anagnost would read them personally, as there is hardly anyone viewing or commenting on his welcome video, thus you would have the chance to reach him via the comments section on the youtube video and place your opinion directly.

Maybe it’s just the dyslexic in me but whenever I see this guys name I read it as Andrew Antagonist. Seems more fitting somehow…
