Autodesk has come up with a brief video commemorating 25 years of 3D Studio / Max. Watch it on YouTube.

Researchers from ETH Zurich have come up with a novel machine learning based method for physics-based fluid simulation. The GPU implementation provides a speedup of one to three orders of magnitude compared to current position-based fluid solvers, allowing it to run in real-time for systems with up to 2 million particles and enabling user interaction. Honduras-based artist Eugenio Herrera has created a Houdini asset for fracturing objects in Cinema 4D. It requires Houdini Engine and the corresponding C4D integration plugin to run. Watch a video and find the download link on Vimeo.

Brian Horgan has been releasing a number of updates in the past months to his great Maya onion skinning tool that gives an outline of a character rather than a fully shaded one. Some of the latest features added include: ghost selected parts of a character, color options and a smooth mode for characters that are smoothed in the viewport. More on Brian Horgan's website.

Tomorrow October 31st 3DS Max will turn 25 years old. In order to celebrate the anniversary, Tom Hudson, the original programmer of 3D Studio for DOS, who rejoined the 3DS Max development team two years ago, has published a great post with a look back at the origins of the software. 25 years, time flies. A great short directed by Beorn Leonard focusing on people's different views on art. It uses an NPR aesthetic and was rendered in real-time using cartoon shading directly from the Blender viewport (no compositing or postprocessing). Chaos Group's Vladimir Koylazov has been testing the recently released Altus denoiser with V-Ray. Emanuele Lecchi has made available a Maxscript to automate the process of rendering the images in Max and running Altus to filter them. More on Chaos Group's forum. (Registration required)
