Autodesk has announced the public beta of a USD plugin for 3ds Max 2022. The new plugin brings USD technology to 3ds Max enabling users to create, edit, work in, work with and collaborate on USD data, including the ability to import and export for cross-platform workflows. The plugin is a separate installation available from users’ Autodesk account page or via the Autodesk Desktop Application. Read the release notes on the 3ds Max 2022 help pages.

Finally, something is moving forward 🥳

Why as a plug-in? Because of the beta status?

Will it stay with the import/export process? Or is this just a first step? Will there be a native integration later?

Yes, beta status for now. This is just the first step. The plug-in approach is something 3ds Max team is doing. You just install what you want. So if you don’t want USD, you don’t install it, the same goes for the Retopology tool. Is also easier to update this way.

Awesome. Since how long I waited for this.
I think this is the most important step in the last years. I’m sure it will bring some salvation. 😉
Thank you everyone who participated in this.

Nice!! I like this plugin approach makes a lot of sense development wise.

This (hopefully) shows they learned their lesson with not keeping up with latest developments in CGI, since this got developped/released quite fast compared how slow they were with implementing new tech in the past. Lets hope they keep it up.

Most positive Max news in a long time. Plugin makes sense, and with that approach I hope we can expect it to be kept up to date with USD and industry standards within reasonable timelines.

It barely supports materials. The limitations on texture mapping make this version not very usable for us.

Texture support is limited (texture wrap settings and offsets are unsupported). Texture graphs are not supported, only direct bitmap inputs are supported.”
