Arnold has good speed of development. Also I very excited that updates comes quickly as possible but in 3ds max all bad as always. Development of MAXtoA very slow, updates comes with no functional features (such as displacenement) 🙁

Everything in this Video is available in the lastest MAXtoA Version including Arnold 5.0.1. (Like they said in the video, you have to download the latest Version from the Solidangle website.)
Also (vector)displacement is working just fine here.

Please check this thread, and you can see not all works well in MAXtoA… And we don’t know how long must wait before this bug will be fixed https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-shading-lighting-and/arnold-for-max-update/m-p/7161092#M28481

That’s not a bug. t happens because max outpues mesh as render geometry while Arnold is based on poly as you see in the answer. To address this issue, 3dsMax SDK has to be changed fundamentally.

I would not call it bad just because there is a small issue.

So which is it a small issue or a fundamental one? Changing either Max to output quads or Arnold to accept triangles doesn’t sound like something either team is concerned with right now. Plus fundamental changes to Max tend to be abandoned before they are completed see XBR/Excalibur.

Yeah, tha is the problem with Autodesk tools over the last years, they implement half baked tools and they abandon them, Arnold is not going to be abandoned any time soon, but max implementation will go behind IMHO

Not having a critical basic feature like displacement or open SubDiv not working or incorrectly working is a non sense, not giving a time frame for the fix is a non sense, and I’m sorry but if something is not working correctly this is a bug, I don’t care if it’s because max code is crap or because Arnold code is crap or because the AtoM code is crap… it’s a bug.

Cheers.

Hey guys and girls,

Head over to the 3ds Max ideas page and vote on my post if you would like to see the Catmull-Clark subdiv issue resolved.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-ideas/3ds-max-needs-to-export-quads-for-catmull-clark-subdiv-to-work/idi-p/7284023

Thanks.

VRay doesn’t do render time OSD either.
You can always apply OSD modifier like any other renderer.
Displacement is also working.
Have you guys even tried it?

Are you serious? Did you try export couple of characters with OSD with value 6 or 7 with animation to .ass file… Max’s OSD not solution.
Subdivide of geometry must be on fly in Arnold not in 3ds max and exported to .ass file without tessellation.
