Autodesk Character Generator

Autodesk has made available a web based service that allows people to create customized 3D characters, rigged and ready to animate. Users can fine-tune every feature of the character’s body. The service works with popular animation packages such as Max and Maya, as well as with game engines like Unity. More on the Autodesk Character Generator’s site.

i’m on autodesk subs for 3dsmax..£500+ per year and this says you need to buy credits?

not even a free example to see how great/crap the model is…who is this for …people with money to throw out a window?

This has been around for a while. I guess they want to make some money off of it but the interface is awful and its very slow. I’d rather have something that would match features to a photo with some additional user input.

Another failure..

Just looked at that http://www.makehuman.org/ link. That’s openSource and way better.

They would be better off using that 123 photo model stuff to generate humans based on photographs like Vance Miller suggested. Use that along with some Auto reTopO stuff from Mudbox then maybe they would have a product.

I really wonder who comes up with this stuff there.

Well – you even get the great Daz Studio Pro for free. And that is a COMPLETE toolset to procedurally create, animate and even render characters
I can’t see this thing ever taking off, even when they would give the characters away for free….

It’s frustrating to see them wasting time, money and programmers on this while Max gets little attention.

This is another [edited] corporate idea which is a culture that Autodesk seems to embrace. Ideas (not all, but a lot of them) that sound good in meetings and have potential to generate quick bucks are the ones that get executed.

It’s a tiny bit encouraging that the Max team hired a couple of actual production artists recently though, they should have some ideas that actually useful in production, not just eye candies, we’ll see…

How about for Max they STOP trying new ideas, and just shameless rip off old ideas?

You know…tired old crud like fluids, decent reliable rigging, etc.
