Epic Games acquire Sketchfab
Epic has announced the acquisition of Sketchfab, a web-based service for viewing, discovering, editing, buying, and selling 3D content. At the time of the acquisition, it is hosting in the region of 4 million 3D assets.
According to Sketchfab, they remain “an independently branded service with the same mission and vision […] [Sketchfab is] already integrated with various Epic Games products like RealityCapture and ArtStation. [Sketchfab] will maintain and expand our integration efforts with all creation tools and 3D/VR/AR platforms, so you can easily upload to and import from Sketchfab everywhere.”
The acquisition brings about some immediate changes. Sellers are now charged a lower percentage on their sales and the Sketchfab Plus tier is now free, allowing users to upload more files at a larger size before having to pay.

Dog-eat-Dog, La Grande Bouffe, predators, velociraptors, jungle, looting, Diablo items-collecting, hunters and collectors… why are these my first associations when I read this news…
(I am especially wondering what was the price Epic paid under the table to Autodesk to absolve Sketchfab just 20 days ago. Actually I am not wondering, i do not care, it is so transparent…) 🙂
Interesting times.
